Meet Leo Petruzzella of Campus Body Salon in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Petruzzella.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in the automotive industry while still in high school. I worked at Sears Automotive installing batteries and tires. After a year of college I decided I wanted to further my career in the automotive industry and was extremely fortunate to work for a high line automotive dealership in Scottsdale. I worked in the service side of the industry for 5 years and then wanted a change and began working in the collision repair side of the industry at independent shops as well as dealership shops. In 2002 I was approached by a former employer asking if I was interested in purchasing his collision repair facility. It has been 15 years now that I have owned and operated Campus Body Salon. I have been blessed with an awesome staff, great loyal client base, and am passionate about what we do in providing excellent client service, highest quality repairs, and assisting our customers in all facets of the repair process.

Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t imagine owning your own business, let alone in this industry, it being a totally smooth road!! We have, I’m sure, the normal struggles in the world of small business ownership. Hiring and retaining qualified people, which is becoming more and more of a challenge as younger people are no longer getting into our industry. In addition to the day to day stresses and struggles of business ownership. Our largest struggle in our industry is working with the insurance companies and trying to educate the consumer. There are so many unfair practices that the insurance industry tries to mandate on our industry and sadly it is all driven by claim severity and trying to protect their bottom line. We try to educate the consumer in all facets of their claim regardless of whether the vehicle is repairable or even in the case of a total loss.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Campus Body Salon is a fully accredited and certified collision repair facility serving the metropolitan Phoenix area. We have been in business since 1973 which is a huge testament to our reputation and the level of service that we provide. There literally are only a few collision repair facilities in the state that have been in existence as long as we have been. We are an I-Car Gold Class facility and are a certified repair facility for all GM, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan makes and models. We do specialize in high end vehicles and are one of the few facilities in the valley that utilize the Celette system which is the only repair system authorized by Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Lexus, Infiniti, etc. Campus Body Salon has an excellent reputation in the industry and with our clients. We consistently have excellent reviews that are done by our clients on social media as well as third party companies that are contracted by the insurance companies that we work with. Campus Body Salon works with ALL insurance companies, but we work for YOU our client. Campus Body Salon is the only repair facility in the valley that offers “Cash for your Crash”. That is a program that we offer to our clients where we will pay you 10% of the insurance estimate repair cost up to $1000.00! And that applies to both insureds and claimants….there is no other shop in town that offers that!!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that our city is a good place for this type of business, however I would love to see this city come up with some type of certification program for repair facilities. It is crazy to think that if someone wants to open up a nail salon they have to be inspected annually, meet certain requirements, etc., in order to open and operate that business. Yet anyone can open a collision repair facility and there are no requirements in terms of operating that business even though these vehicles are potentially 3-5 thousand pound weapons driving down the road!!
