Meet Laura Larkin of Lilytoday Senior Living Representatives in Maricopa County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Larkin.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a City employee working in cube life, I became friends with my cube neighbor. As we talked about cube life and how it would be to be on the outside, we formed a side hustle called Sweet New Baby. It just so happened that our new photo sharing site that we were sure was going to help us escape was formed right before Facebook. Our dreams had been shattered as you can imagine.

Deciding that we would both do our own thing I used my city funds for education to learn about seniors, and received my certifications in Holistic Nutrition, Senior Exercise, Senior Nutrition and created my first LLC, Lilytoday. However, I found myself opening a small juice bar first instead of helping seniors with nutrition. I realized after about a year that having a brick and mortar business was not all it was cut out to be.

Not too long after closing the juice bar a friend of mine approached me about the idea of Senior Placement and Resources, well that was right up my alley. I had befriended an 89-year-old senior named Lily who touched my heart years prior (hence the business name Lilytoday). I knew this had to be the business for me, I purchased back some years to retire early and went head on to become a full-fledged entrepreneur. I loved my freedom so much I couldn’t stop there and also started a non-profit The Delia Foundation.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After working my entire career for someone else, learning how to have my own business was a struggle. Starting off as a side business, determining how to juggle work and family and the new company. I would say the financial part was the hardest part of all. The mistakes that were made several times, and the debt that it caused. But being a determined individual I learned from those mistakes. I found it that once you are relying on yourself to make money, you work harder, longer and smarter.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lilytoday Senior Living Representatives – what should we know?

We ask the hard questions like, “Is Assisted Living really what is best?”

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would never have become an entrepreneur if it wasn’t for my cube neighbor and friend John, he pushed me when I thought I could never work for myself. I am happy to say he also left the city and is now a business owner; we now share a real office together to save on cost.

My friend and Social Worker Maggie who works with me has been fantastic I do not know what I would do without her. When I am busy working on the Non-profit business, she is there to pick up the slack and step in.

Kelly, my daughter, has played such a critical role in all of this, afternoons drinking wine together and her telling me that I can do it and has been right there every step of the way.

One last person is my father, who is no longer with us but told me over and over again that I could do anything in life and that whatever I wanted was within reach.
