Meet La Shanda Millner-Murphy of La Shanda M3 in Charlotte

Today we’d like to introduce you to La Shanda Millner-Murphy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
-33 years in the Fashion Industry

-Established in 1984 at 16 years -old, a ladies’ boutique in Winston-Salem, NC (hometown) offering dresses and custom accessories. I styled women in the NC and Virginia areas.

– Added a men’s tuxedo boutique 4 years later targeting weddings, proms and special group events… That’s when the men start calling me “Tuxedo Lady” a name that I inherited as my business name.

-2015 co-authored a book found on Amazon… Professionable: Every Woman can be Professional and Fashionable

-Studied business and received BA in business at UnC -Charlotte 1988

-Come from a family of entrepreneurs… grandfather owned a sawmill, father owned service stations and construction company… I worked in ALL of the businesses, learning the Art of Business at a very young age… but became very interested and more attentive at age 11.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting out was very smooth because My only responsibility, due to my parents being the financial provider at that time, was to do well in my college and come home on the weekends to work IN my business … Little did I know, after graduating from UNC-Charlotte BA in business that it took a little more than that to not only run a business but to grow your business… The wakeup call showed me that marketing, finance and management are the essentials to your daily responsibility of running a business … Before I realized that I was spending/buying over my budget, not really paying attention to the loopholes in my business… These lessons caused me to downsize my staff ( losing the best manager on this earth) and required me to put my WHOLE self in the business to understand that if I wanted to continue to be in business I needed to shift my commitment and mindset … I am so thankful that that experience happened early in my career so I can witness this day of 33 years so far and steady pushing to witness more years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about La Shanda M3 – what should we know?
Through the years, I have found other related areas of fashion and image. I work tirelessly on in my business which allows me to connect with more people in various ways.

Professional Style Coach – coaching/styling professionals on image management in order to build their brand in their workplace ( entrepreneur , white collar, blue collar)

Tuxedo Lady (formalwear business) I Style men for tuxedo rentals, sales or personally custom design their tuxedo for weddings, proms or special event.

I use the book that I co-authored “Professionable”: Every woman Can Be Professional and Fashionable found on, by conducting workshops / seminars around the topic of Image and creating your individuality through professional dressing… It’s an easy and fun guide for women to understand and dress appropriately based on being knowledgeable of their own body type.

I am proud to provide 33 years of “fashion and image sense” to my clients and the community (speaking)… I truly believe that everybody shape has a personal style in which one should embrace…

My brand offers style, inspiration, confidence and education … this creates a total brand package for my clients

Tagline… I inspire human confidence …one person, one style and one closet at a time.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Parents – they were my financial support to get me started and taught me to have An OWNERSHIP mindset …. work for self … but help/lift someone using the knowledge and experience that I gain thru the journey … and that’s what I do to this day … I volunteer in the school system, mentor young girls that are participants in several non-profit organizations, hire youth interns to give them the experience of running a business and volunteer at Goodwill Industries.

Clients- I strive to provide a level of excellence in the services and products that I offer to ALL of my clients … that experience in turns causes them to share with other potential clients…
