Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Marie.
Kim is the founder and president of Mirror Dog Productions, an award-winning multimedia production company that inspires awareness, education, and change from the inside, out.
As a cause-related and purpose-driven entrepreneur, Kim decided to establish herself as a multimedia producer early in her life’s journey. She left a fantastic career in law enforcement and firefighting to take a leap of faith. She followed her true dream and traveled to Hollywood to create her philanthropic platform.
As a small-town Michigander, Kim pushed through her fears, packed up her house and two dogs, and then drove across the country to a new home in California. Despite having no family or friends with her, Kim boldly stepped out to the city of Los Angeles. Kim expressed that, for the first time in her life, “I finally felt like I belonged, I have never felt that before. I am home.” Kim’s faith gave her the strength, courage, and determination to pursue entry into production, one of the world’s most difficult industries. Since she had already been exposed to other male –dominated industries, Kim was no stranger to the extra challenges she was facing.
Little did she know what the next decade (plus) would have in store for her. A roller-coaster of events may have stretched her faith, but it provided opportunities for her to also rely on her character, integrity, and morals. This all propelled her growth personally and professionally. Kim attributes her growth to aspirations of developing herself from the inside, out. For over a decade, she focused on learning skills behind the scenes and in front of the camera before branching out to create Mirror Dog Productions. She has taken on various roles as writer, director, producer, actor, and as part of the crew. This, in turn, gave her opportunities to work with and learn from already-successful writers, producers, directors, and some of best people in Hollywood. Kim goes on to say: “I was blessed to have been taken under the wing of some of Hollywood’s most iconic talents, confirming that I was in the right place, at the right time.”
As an “outside the box” businesswoman, Kim drew from her rich background, varied experiences, and faith-based foundation to achieve her current successes in consulting, filmmaking, and marketing.
Somewhere along the ride, Kim found another home for herself in Phoenix. “What I have found since my time in Phoenix area, is it feels like home. Great energy, businesses, met amazing new friends, great restaurants, and the adventures you can have outdoors are limitless. I love the hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, paddle boarding. Who knew you could be in the middle of the desert and be on a lake!”.
Kim has already completed her first feature film, Urban Myths. Though not without trials and tribulations. Determined to complete her film—as she expresses: “paying her dues to the movie gods,”—she wore multiple hats by writing, producing, directing, and even stepping in to help edit. These contributions went on to be recognized in several national film festivals, the Accolade Film Competition, The American Film Award, and LAIFF (just to name a few), garnering her several prestigious industry awards.
Like every one of us, Kim experiences the challenges and struggles of everyday life. With her Directorial Debut in Urban Myths, she reaches through time and brings tribal stories to the screen and new audiences. In the struggle to balance the wolf-of-darkness and the wolf-of-light, the question is: which wolf do you feed? Ultimately, the answer is the one that serves your mission. Kim chooses to feed the wolf-of-light. Her work brings light to dark places. By keeping this as her focus and upholding her commitments, she raises herself up into succesfulness.
Kim has a business model of ‘Art Meets Commerce’ that broadens her vision and helps shape the world through her craft. She supports and assists people into shifting to better purpose. Through the art of film, Kim reaches many by providing entertainment and education about this world’s mysterious gifts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
“Smooth road, not exactly. I wouldn’t change it for the world. What most people don’t do is fall in love with the “process” we all have to endure to live our life purpose or dream. It is easy to fall in love with the dream but the challenge is having to go through the process to obtain those dreams.
The biggest obstacle was myself. The fears and challenges our minds play with us. The personal journey of finding my truth, purpose, and mission came with humility, sacrifice, and hard work. There was a time I lost everything: health, money, family, home. That season forever changed me and strengthened my journey and trust in god. Most importantly, through the process it built me from the inside out. Who you become through the process is priceless and no one can ever take that away from you. Even if you loose your car, house, or money. Those things are always replaceable. Once your find your peace no one can take that away from you.“
The competition is fierce in this industry, especially for a woman. The struggles of being a minority means sacrificing more and working even harder to first get the work and then again to keep it. By successfully completing Urban Myths, Kim exhibits a high level of tenacity, vision, and drive. She accomplishes this task when only 7% of all films produced are directed by women.
Mirror Dog Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets us apart is our business model ‘Art Meets Commerce’ and the authenticity, the passion, and the compassion on which Mirror Dog Productions is built. My mission and the mission of Mirror Dog Productions is to help lift the fallen, restore the broken, and help the hurting. We strive to help others make our world a better place. We believe that through the art we create and our outreach we can accomplish our mission and change lives.
Along with business and marketing, I have spent many years studying spirituality, religion, and philosophy. I live my life, define my purpose, and have created my business based on what can be described as an inside/out philosophy. Everything we are, everything we become, and everything we create can only be from two directions: from the inside/out or the outside/in. In my case the power, compassion, and spirituality I possess on the inside is translated into the things I plan and create. No matter how much the world continues to evolve, grow, and change it will always need a strong god-centered source of positive messaging.
What is ‘success’ or ‘successful’ for you?
“Success is measured by the lives you impact on a daily basis in a positive way. The positive changes we bring and the level of outreach we have can bring hope, inspiration, education, awareness to lives all around the world.”
