Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiera Dent.
Kiera, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my dental career in high school when I had a burning desire to find a job where I could wear scrubs. I fell in love with the profession and even though my undergraduate degree was taking me towards Marriage and Family Therapy, My heart was committed to dental. Blend my undergraduate degree and my passion and you get the two companies: Kiera’s Dental Consulting and Dental Placement Pros.
I worked as a dental assistant, dental front office, office manager, worked at Midwestern University- Glendale, AZ’s College of Dental Medicine, started a practice with a new grad from Midwestern, was part-owner of several dental offices, offer in-office dental consulting and now recruiting for all aspects of the dental office nationwide. I have seen it all and due to these experiences, I realized I wanted to start my own companies to be able to help even more people in many different areas.
I realized that when a person has passion, persistence, and a little bit of good luck and goodwill, magic truly happens. I never thought I would own my own company where I get to travel, help clients, and really impact the world of dentistry. However, that is exactly where I am now. I live my dream. I am able to work hard, love what I do, and do it in a way that is meaningful to me. It inspires creativity, change, and positivity– all of which I live for!
I no longer wear scrubs, but the passion and love for the world of dentistry is what propels and inspires me to find new, creative ways to continue impacting the world for good.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NO! Owning your own company is hard work. Some days I wonder “what did I get myself into” and then I giggle and get back to work. It is really hard.
Some of the hardest things about owning my own companies is “knowing what to do” and how to get there. When you work for someone else, they tell you what to do. They have forged the way and everything rides on them. When you own your own company, everything relies on you and you are the one responsible for inventing, creating, and finding the best way to get to your end results.
Other challenges: Finding the right people to work with me. When you start out, you don’t know the end result exactly. Finding people who can believe in the vision and jump on board is a challenge and when you find them, hang onto them because they become the foundation of your company.
Another challenge is realizing that where you thought you might be isn’t always where you end up– and finding the true beauty that resides in that path. I have truly taken a “winding river” approach to growing the companies. I thought I would be somewhere completely different– not even financially speaking– than where I am today. I have had to learn to appreciate and love the journey and realize that when I do that, I always end up right where I was meant to be.
Something else that has been hard is staying positive. Owning your own business can come with a lot of challenges and to stay positive and not give up is a constant struggle. Surround yourself with great people– you will depend on them more than just working. I use my team to constantly motivate and encourage me to keep going, keep growing, keep becoming.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dental Placement Pros and Kiera’s Dental Consulting – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I have two companies: Kiera’s Dental Consulting and Dental Placement Pros. With the consulting, I work hard to help practices become the best that they can be through systems, culture, accountability and anything else they are in need of. Every office is different. Every office gets a customized approach– nothing is the same. It is a daily opportunity to create with the offices.
Dental Placement Pros is a recruiting company that hires dental positions including: associate, dental assistants, hygienists, front desk, office managers, and anything else that will help the office. We hire nationwide and we work with the best offices and hire only the best candidates.
As a company, I am most proud that we offer something different than our competitors. We offer only the best. I only work with incredible offices. We only hire incredible candidates. In consulting, I don’t go in with a custom set roadmap but create based on what that office’s needs. I inspire all of my team to be the best in their world and empower all of our clients to be their best– nothing is the same and all of it is custom made for each client.
I’m also very proud of my team. I have people that believe in me and the services that are offered. I can’t thank them enough for believing in me and taking a leap of faith in a company that could have failed. They constantly push for things to be better and are the source and lifeblood of the company. I am beyond proud of the team I have standing with me.
I am so very proud and thankful for the clients that keep me in business, trust me with their offices and to hire for them. I am amazed that the clients I have listen and implement.
I am also very thankful for a couple of key players: Brad Smith, Mark Costes, Justin Schmidt and Ellie Moffat. Brad Smith is the dean of Midwestern University- Glendale, AZ’s College of Dental Medicine. He believed in me when he hired me 5 years ago. He constantly pushes me and helps me to become better. He is the reason I created Dental Placement Pros and he is a constant supporter of me and the companies.
Mark Costes and I met in January and my life hasn’t been the same. Mark is the podcast host of Dentalprenuer and also owns Dental Success Institute. Mark met me for about 10 minutes and then called me the next day offering for me to be his in-office consultant, partner in practices, regional manager and helped me launch Dental Placement Pros. Mark believed in me. He trusted me with his clients. He is a constant support and has truly made me into an overnight consultant success. I am appreciative he believed in me enough to help me create what I have created.
Ellie Moffat is my business partner in Dental Placement Pros and without her, that company wouldn’t survive. She didn’t have any dental background but has been my best friend for 7 years. She called me one day and said “I’m quitting my job and working for you. Don’t worry. I know this is right.” She was right and she is the best choice I made. She constantly creates, pushes me and believes in me. I’m proud of the leader and partner she has become.
The companies are set apart by our motto: “We only deliver the best. Period.” This fosters incredible, creative, and outstanding service that we offer to each and every one of our clients. I constantly stress about our clients. Year to date we have been in over 40 consulting offices and are hiring for over 60 offices. I think about these offices. When I am in town, I see my clients, their hires, and constantly keep in touch with them. They become my best friends. I feel lucky to say that I have best friends nationwide. And I sincerely feel that way.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future is always unknown but we have a set expectation- “Always give the best. Period.” So, with consulting, we plan to continue to grow. We are looking for more consultants to join the team to continue to positively change the world of dentistry.
With Dental Placement Pros, we are planning to be the #1 recruiting company in America and to help students graduating find private practice jobs that are incredible. We will not be the only recruiting company– there are so many offices so I appreciate all of the recruiting services out there. However, Dental Placement Pros will always help students find associateships that are private practices and only.
We will continue to grow, push ourselves, and become the best that we can be. We will never stop improving. We will never give up.
