Today we’d like to introduce you to Khali Titsch.
Khali, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey as a wedding photographer a few years ago. I had always been photographing people, places and things for over ten years but never thought to turn it into a business until then. I was working a brutal desk job in Phoenix and I remember talking to my coworker upfront on our lunch break, saying “I think I could really do it.”
I hit the ground running. Every free second I was photographing something. Friends, family, newborns, couples sessions, whatever I could. I was watching hours upon hours of tutorial videos, joining educational groups on Facebook and soaking up information like a sponge.
It definitely took some time, energy and a lot of sleepless nights, but I am finally in an amazing place with my business and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love my job; I get to constantly hear unique and heartwarming love stories and celebrate these special moments with strangers who quickly turn into friends.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like I mentioned, success didn’t happen overnight for me. Sometimes in this community, it does, and that is definitely a challenging thing to overcome. A comparison is a huge monster in the photography industry. I have struggled with comparing myself to other people, judging my worth based off Instagram followers and wondering if I should quit when I go through a slow period.
I really am grateful to have some amazing friends in the photography community who have helped me through those difficult emotions and push through. While I still face those challenges and thoughts sometimes I do my best to stay positive, and to also let other people going through a similar struggle know they aren’t alone!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with KMT Photos – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in couples photography mostly – weddings, intimate weddings and elopements. I am definitely known as more of a “dark and moody” photographer although I’d say my style can fluctuate based on where and when I’m shooting. If I had to choose three words to describe my style they’d be joyful, warm and intimate.
I am really proud of a recent accomplishment with my friend Kali who is also a wedding photographer. We created the Creative Connective, which is a series of day-long styled shoots for photographers to build content for their portfolio, stretch their limits and make new friendships. We wanted something more than a styled shoot. We wanted to give photographers an opportunity to try photographing new things without the pressure of a paid client and also to embrace community over competition when it comes to photography and videography.
I’d say what sets me apart from others is I am very, VERY compassionate and very empathetic. I always put myself in my clients’ shoes and I feel emotions very deeply. I will do everything to make sure my couples and other photographers (at the shootout) are having an amazing experience whenever we work together.
What role has luck had in your life and business?
I’d say Instagram has definitely been a good luck charm for me in the last year or so. It can be hard with the way that app sorts different posts to be seen. But I tend to get discovered by my brides and grooms primarily through Instagram. While this isn’t all luck (I have spent a lot of time learning how to market on Instagram) there are periods where I sure am thankful to the IG gods for helping me be seen.
