Meet Kelly Stoddard of The Artsy Blonde

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Stoddard.

Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Creativity has always been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. With no formal art education, I am a self-taught artist. My earliest memories of art started younger than the age of five. All I needed was a piece of paper and a brush or a pen in my hand to be happy.

In high school, I really grew as an artist and experimented with different mediums. I learned that I loved to draw faces, fashion sketches, calligraphy, and paint watercolor floral arrangements. In college, I discovered a whole new world of digital art. I was fascinated with the trendy, fun, and colorful, cartoonish style I could create.

I have now branched into what I call mixed media art where I couple photography and fashion with illustration. It is so fun to have endless creativity, textures, and colors of all hues available to me through digital art and to be able to collaborate them with images anywhere from fashion photography to memories snapped on an iPhone.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My business evolved from a “just for fun” account where I shared my creations into something where people from all over the country have reached out to ask me to illustrate their photos. This has been a road where I am learning entrepreneurship first hand and opening the door to business through social media.

Some of the challenges along the way have really come down to overcoming self-doubt and finding the confidence to believe in my abilities. I have learned a lot about myself as an artist and an entrepreneur, and I am so excited to see where this journey takes me.

The Artsy Blonde – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I created the brand “The Artsy Blonde” before I was even getting into mixed media art. I was really focusing on watercolor at the time and knew I wanted to change my brand so that I could explore other mediums in art without having a limited name. The Artsy Blonde really suits my art and my personality because I love fun, fashion, and beauty. My motto is to create whimsey and magic in all of my pieces.

As I began posting more of my mixed media art, I started to get a lot of feedback from people I didn’t even know asking if I could decorate their photos and draw their portraits. I realized that I had a talent that could give people the whimsey and magic I love, so I pursued this as a business opportunity. I decided to open my talent up for anyone who wants their photos made magical and for those who want unique branding for their businesses, blogs, and social media.

It’s been so exciting to see all the different ways people have taken my artwork and expanded it from there by framing them, creating ornaments, coffee mugs, Christmas cards, and unique gifts. I have kept my pricing very affordable for all to enjoy.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up, I lived from art project to art project. I jumped at any chance I got to be creative, and I found my gift of creativity at a young age. I have always had sketchbooks and piles of papers filled with doodles, flowers, faces, and fashion. It is really fun to be able to look back on where I started and how my art and inspiration has evolved into where I am today.
