Meet Katrina Burris-Dillon of Prom’yse Art.Poetry.Apparel in Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Burris-Dillon.

Katrina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being a stay at home mom, I wanted to generate my income. For a while, my husband and I had been discussing starting a T-shirt business. Being that he is a visual artist and does tattoos he had the idea of putting my poetry on shirts and other merch along with his art. I thought that was a dope idea. We started small to see how people would like our stuff. We had gotten a good response and quite a few customers. Later I took it a step further, since I like crafting and customizing things I figured why not do more than just shirts. We began to print on T-shirts, cup, bags, leggings and underwear!

Anything I could make, I tried it. I even did some custom picture candles. I wanted to tackle anything and everything I possibly could to add to the company. Later my husband Troy also know as “Drivebye Tatz” began to teach me to do body piercing to add to the art side. We have been blessed to be a part of the AZ Black Owned Business Expo where I have the honor of being part of the committee, which is coming up in Feb.2020. It’s so crazy that within these few years I was also working on my poetry book The Melanated Butterfly which is now available for purchase on Amazon.com in paperback and for Kindle! The response has been good overall. The reactions on people’s faces when they hear what all we do or have done like wow that’s a lot!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anything worth having comes easy or quick. There have been quite a few bumps but we seem to make through each time. You know things happen. Computers crash, printers give out. You just have to roll with the punches. I saw a meme that said, ” When life gives you lemons, make a chocolate cake and leave people wondering how the hell did you do it!” I’m making a chocolate cake!

Please tell us about your business.
We are what our name says, art, poetry and apparel. We “art” create and customize anything and everything we can. From canvas, clothing to the body. It’s all customizable. I’m most proud of the fact that we started from scratch. Using Google to do all our research and have people support our hustle and hard work. What sets us apart from others is that we do so much with it just being my husband and I handling things as a husband and wife team.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My kids are major motivators. They love to ask about the new stuff we have coming out or if I get to go pierce a client. Our family and friends have shown so much support by liking, sharing and purchasing from us. We’ve made some wonderful business contacts and quite a few have become friends. We share information with each other that can help out our businesses, as well as recommend each other’s services.
