Meet Kate Wilkinson of Kate Wilkinson Hair in Prescott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Wilkinson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I entered cosmetology school when I was 17 and have been in the hair industry since graduating. I began my career working within franchised salons until I realized 7 years ago that working independently would provide more opportunity and creative control. I now operate within my own business in downtown Prescott, Arizona specializing in Natural Hair Color techniques & Hair Extensions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth by any means. I began very young and struggled with building a consistent clientele amongst single motherhood, and more importantly, the recession (2007). I was not the only one, the entire beauty industry was affected by the consumer’s view of our services is a luxury, not a necessity. Although I still kept my head above water and was able to propel myself forward into what I have made now. Luckily the hair industry is now thriving, I am where I am today because of the support provided by my mentors and fellow hair artists around me.

Please tell us about Kate Wilkinson Hair.
I work within a quaint salon in downtown Prescott filled with many other talented hair artists, a team I truly feel blessed to be a part of because of our mutual support and ability to motivate one another. I specialize in natural hair color techniques & hair extensions in which I have been receiving ongoing education throughout the past year. I believe growth needs to be constant, I am always learning.

Amongst extended hair education, I have also been engaged in courses focused around business growth strategies specifically in the hair industry. Thankfully the industry as a whole is thriving and the resources are endless.

I feel I offer a very personal and guest-centered experience. Getting your hair done should be more than just getting your hair done. I believe it needs to involve connection, amenities, and open communication to best meet the guest’s needs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was born in San Diego California. Some of my favorite childhood memories were when my family and I would spend time at the beach. I loved hunting for seashells and playing with the sea creatures that would wash up the shore.
