Meet Karen Mullarkey of “No Mullarkey” Personal Training in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Mullarkey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Karen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been involved in the fitness industry for most of my life. I began playing sports as a small child while growing up in Louisville, KY which is where my southern accent comes from. I went on to earn a division one field hockey scholarship to Kent State University in Ohio. Once I graduated I knew I belonged out west so I packed up and never looked back. After a couple snowboarding season’s in Colorado, I then moved to Scottsdale, AZ where I currently reside. Having missed being a competitive athlete, I began competing in the Figure Division of the NPC in 2004 and went on to earn my IFBB pro card in 2007 and later crossed over as a WBFF pro in 2011. I spent the past 10 years competing against the best physiques around the world!

I have since retired from competing so I can focus on building my personal training business “No Mullarkey” Personal training and my fitness consulting business. I train and consult with clients all around the globe and continue to build my fitness empire. I currently work with pro golfers (one of which is LPGA pro, Cheyenne Woods), recreational skiers and snowboarders, national figure, bikini and physique competitors and the everyday individual looking to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

My philosophy is much more unique than many fitness enthusiasts out there. I know how to balance life and fitness. Follow me on social media and you will find me showing fitness tips on the slopes flying down the mountain on my snowboard, shooting tips on my boat “No Mullarkey” while wakeboarding and water skiing and of course in the gym itself. My passion for fitness comes out in everything I do as I lead by example. You might even find me challenging some poor soul to a push-up contest in the middle of a music festival, I LOVE to have fun with fitness!

I also began fitness modeling at the start of my career and have since landed 4 covers and have been published in almost every major national fitness publication. I am an ISSA certified personal trainer and was just featured in a national campaign ad for ISSA. I am also an author of 4 Amazon Best Seller Fitness, E-Books! I feel blessed to not only be an athlete and not afraid to sweat that I also enjoy being in front of the camera. I love being an inspiration and role model by sharing my stories and by putting my pen to paper.

I am a firm believer in living life to it’s fullest because life is just too darn short……”YEEHAW BABY”! Remember…….”No Excuses and that’s No Mullarkey”!

Has it been a smooth road?
No road has ever been smooth for me, I have always had to fight for what I want. I wouldn’t have it any other way! The more you have to fight and work, the better accomplishing that goal feels. I would prefer to earn it than to have it handed to me. It took 3 years for me to FINALLY start to build a solid client foundation. I remember going home and crying because it seemed like I couldn’t get a good number of clients. I knew that I didn’t want to go back to working for the man so I buckled down and pushed forward. Now I have a steady business of 50+ clients locally, nationally and internationally.

The other biggest struggle was going through a terrible divorce from a man that was trying to crush me financially. He was the breadwinner and knew I could not fight him in court. He continued to rack up attorney fees. This only made me work harder and I knew I had to make this business work or go back to corporate America. I put my head down, used negativity as a positive driving force and began paying my bills by doing what I love for a living. All those hardships make it that much sweeter:)

So, as you know, we’re impressed with “No Mullarkey” Personal Training – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
“No Mullarkey” Personal Training is exactly what it states……I take the “No Bull” approach to fitness and want my clients to work hard to accomplish their fitness goals. I will never tell a client that they can’t do something. We all can do anything we put our minds too, we just have to step outside of our comfort zone and go for it. I believe in positive reinforcement to motivate my clients. I specialize in figure, bikini and physique competition prep and also golf fitness. Having competed for 10 years and earning my pro status in the IFBB, I know what it takes to motivate my clients to achieve their goal of stepping on stage to compete. I have regional and national competitors who often come out on top.

I also have branched out into Golf Fitness, which makes sense considering I live in the golf Mecca of Scottsdale. I have had the pleasure of training LPGA Pro Cheyenne Woods who just wrapped up her 3rd professional season. We will be resuming our training sessions this week while she is on her break. I have also worked with Long Drive Pro, Tyler Kellett who placed 4th in the Remax World Long Drive Tournament back in 2013. I train my golfers like the athletes they are. Lastly, I work with clients locally and virtually to achieve any fitness goal they have in mind. I work with all ages from high school athletes to folks in their 20’s-70’s who want to get fit and stay fit. My virtual business has taken off and I have had the pleasure of working with folks around the globe. It really makes me smile when I can help someone I may never meet in person. What a great technological age we live in.

I am proud because each year I strive to change more lives and to push “No Mullarkey” Personal Training to the next level. I believe in constantly learning, growing and reaching for the stars. I recently published 4 fitness E-Books which hit the #1 Best Sellers List on Amazon. I wanted to give those who can’t afford the luxury of having a personal trainer a budget-friendly workout program, guaranteed to get the results.

What sets me apart is that I keep it real! I truly believe in each of my clients no matter how difficult their fitness journey may be. What you see is what you get with “No Mullarkey” Personal Training. I truly love what I do for a living and am passionate about helping others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Scottsdale has certainly grown on me since I moved here in 2001. Never did I think I would be contributing to such a vibrant community through personal training. Yes, the summers are rough, but it’s so worth the gorgeous winters. This city is full of go-getters, entrepreneurs and folks not scared to take the path less traveled. This has been such a motivator for me as a small business owner.

I am also an avid lover of the outdoors and there is so much to do here. Hiking trails are right out my back door, I enjoy the gorgeous lakes here in the summer and it’s just. a short trip to the snow if I want to go snowboarding. Arizona is the only state that I have lived in where I drove north for 2 hours, went snowboarding and then put on flip flops for the drive back to the desert. Arizona and Scottsdale really do have it all.

The heat in the summer is probably the biggest downfall. My advice, get a boat:)
