Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Justin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found a passion for photography when I was a young child. My grandmother gave me her film camera as a present because I was fascinated with the photos she had all over her house. I took the camera everywhere and took pictures of everything I saw. I wasn’t good at first, I would go through rolls and rolls of film just to see what would come of it. It was a hobby at first, nothing more. My friend and family utilized that hobby to get photos of themselves and their families. As I did more photo-shoots, I started to develop my own style and realized that I able to capture not only just a good photo but I was able to capture feelings, emotions, and stories with each shot. I wanted every image to show the person I was photographing a side of them self they didn’t know or see. This drive to capture these expressions also led me to model and take self-portraits. Much of my work has been creating a platform for me to express my emotions and my individuality.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part for me was that I kinda fell into photography, I am self-taught. I never took any classes or had anyone showed me how and what to do. Everything I did was trial and error. Some things worked and a lot failed, but each time I would go back to the drawing board and research and then continue to shoot. I was very passionate about learning every aspect of what my camera could do and why it did it.
More often then not, I would use myself as my guinea pig, I would set my camera equipment up and take portraits of myself. Let me tell you it is very humbling and hard to scrutinize your own photos. Doing this made me want to make sure that the photos of other people would make them feel flattered and happy with the end product.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Justin Smith Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in portrait photography. I love to capture the beauty of people for who they are as an individual. I want to make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera because I know how nervous you can get. I know I do when someone has a camera pointed at me. I feel that unlike more commercialized photography companies I want to know what makes the person I am shooting so special. I want them to feel that genuine connection to make a friend and to have a good time,
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that is what I do the most essential qualities that you need is perspective. If you are able to see the world in many different ways it helps you to look at situations, people, setting different ways. One of the key traits of my photography is the illusion of being somewhere else. A lot of my photography is done in and around Tucson, AZ. With that being said most of my photography looks like it is in other places around the world.
