Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Whiteley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been practicing acupuncture for about ten years now. I’ve always had an interest in medicine and most of my career has been involved in this field in one way or another. I’m particularly interested in making medicine affordable and accessible to people and operate a clinic using a sliding scale system for payments. I continue to study and learn more from various teachers and find this work to be extremely fulfilling and interesting. Can’t ask for more than a job where you get to help people feel better.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been fairly lucky I would say. Working in a field that is still seen by some as somewhat ”fringe” has its challenges. I see a lot of people at the end of their rope. They’ve tried everything under the sun that western medicine has to offer and haven’t found good solutions there, so I’m often seeing complicated cases or ones that haven’t responded well to other treatments. Acupuncture is a great means of preventative medicine as well which is another nice feature. I also see people in lots of pain or grief which can be challenging, although there’s as much reward that comes when you’re able to help these folks feel better. Running a small business is always a challenge, and this one is no different!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Common Roots Acupuncture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Common Roots Acupuncture is a non-profit acupuncture clinic that operates on a sliding scale of $20-40. Patients chose what they can afford within that range and there is no proof of income required. Acupuncture is most well known for treating pain and back, neck, and shoulder pain are the most common things I see day in and day out. It is also extremely helpful though with depression, anxiety, stress, digestive complaints, menstrual difficulties, sleep issues, and difficult to diagnose conditions.
I’m quite proud of the clinic and the community that has been established around it. The patients sharing their successes with friends and family and trusting us to take care of these folks as well always tells me we’re doing good work. Many times also acupuncture is quite out of range of affordability for folks, and our clinic removes a lot of those barriers so that average working people can receive the benefits of acupuncture.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the size. Not too big and not too small. Plenty of beautiful and accessible nature not too far away. The heat isn’t my favorite. Those summers seem to drag on and on.
