Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan O’Brien.
Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was very young, I have always had a passion for creating visual and digital forms of engaging with people. I started volunteering at my church when I was 12. It was a 1,000 member congregation per service, one of the larger churches in my home state of Minnesota. I would run the sound, lighting, and screens, averaging 17 hours per week there. When I was 14, I was hired to record all of the weddings as well as completely set up the stage and be in charge of all creative aspects of services. This was fascinating to me and I fell in love. I went to ASU for their film program and started my business hiring several of my classmates. This took off and we have created hundreds of promotional videos for clients both locally and around the country. Our roots are deep within ASU partnering with the Sun Devil Marketplace as well as the ASU Bookstore. We now have a full office space, editing room and studio to work out of.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For then, most part is has been a smooth road. My weaker suits have been legal and finance-related areas, so taking on those tasks was always a struggle, but I have grown the most from learning these areas. I find challenges within business development to be a satisfying growth opportunity. Another one of my largest struggles is time management. I average between 12-18 hours a day, seven days a week at the office. When we first moved into the office, I didn’t take a day off for five months straight. Finding time to eat, work out, and staying healthy while keeping up with the day to day tasks of running a company can be difficult. One of the greatest ways we have grown was by hiring a full-time general manager. He has allowed me to have more freed up time to focus on my personal health.
Voyage Pro – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a content creation company. Anyone, whether personal, business, or corporate can benefit greatly from having high-quality digital content to show the world what they have. We mostly are in the industry of video production, but we also do photography and have a very talented team of models who are in many of our shoots. We help companies both locally and around the country. Companies often ship us their products and we create videos from the Phoenix area featuring our models using the products. The combination between video production/photography and the way we incorporate our models all in a remote way for the client makes us 1 of a kind! We sell our services in the form of digital packages and clients can order directly from our website.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Sophia Lovas, the manager of the Sun Devil Marketplace is one of the main reasons I was able to start my business. I was a floor employee at the store folding shirts all day and she was able to turn my job into making content for the store which elevated into my business making content for the store. She has helped so many young entrepreneurs within the Phoenix area grow. I would not be where I am today if she did not see a spark in me and take action on it.
