Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Rea.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joey. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I began studying herbs while living in France in 2014, this was just self-study. When I returned, I took a Western Herbalism program at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts and from there apprenticed with one of my teachers Brittney Sounart, RH. I began learning about the average person and what kinds of health issues they were dealing with and so on. Even me, I had found subtle and evident changes in my body from taking certain herbs for certain periods of time, and these changes were ones one doesn’t think they can really change in their bodies – ridded chronic acne, regulated reproductive hormones, supported a complete change in the gut microbiome, the list goes on!
My idea for Wild Sun Wellness sparked one day when I realized the general public needs to have more knowledge about these natural substances so they can realize that they are in charge of their health and these herbs can seriously support them on their journeys. I began thinking deeply about what a unique but simple way would be to get these herbs into people’s hands and of course into their bodies! And it just hit me – create a line of herbal powder blends that are simple to use and simple to understand. I worked on developing the product line and the brand very hard in the following months and was able to get my products on my online shop (www.wildsunwellness.com/shop/
Through the rest of 2018, I began approaching some local retailers (and plan to approach more in the future) inquiring if they would be interested in carrying the products. As of now, you can find Wild Sun Wellness products in Local Nomad, Gather at the Churchill, Yoga Pulse Studio, and the Queen Creek Olive Mill.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been an exciting road, smooth is not necessarily the word I would use. The most challenging learning experiences have been time management, financial, and the ins and outs of learning how a small business really works. I have a full-time job aside from Wild Sun Wellness, so that is where the time management struggle comes into play.
I find that the passion and dedication to Wild Sun Wellness’ mission (“Spreading the herbal word through tasteful experience.”) is what gets me motivated to get things done. I understand that people are unaware of the wonders of herbal medicine and I have taken it upon myself to spread that exposure to the general public because I feel that everyone deserves a fair shot at good health and this is one way to truly support that.
As for financial struggles, I initially invested a small bit of money into the business to get it going, and from there it has slowly grown and dipped and grown again. I think my biggest challenge with Wild Sun’s financial growth is working within the budget and still being able to put out a really good quality product.
Over the past year and a half, I have learned so much about owning a small business and how much hard work and love that goes into it. It gives me a more appreciative perspective on all the small business owners out there that are doing something amazing for a cause they believe in. I am excited for the year to come and to see what else I will learn along the way!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the founder of Wild Sun Wellness. I am the one who created the herbal formulas for the Herbal Powders, the essential oil blends for the aromatherapy roll-ons, and I run day-to-day operations such as marketing, order fulfillment, administrative work, and all that other fun stuff. I specialize in the herbs, of course! I am an herbalist and have been studying the magical world of herbs for over four years now.
I am most proud of the brand I have created. A brand that is transparent with its practices, where it sources its herbs from, growing methods of plants used (organic of course!), and a brand that people are interested to learn about, and then are happy with the results they get.
I think what sets Wild Sun Wellness apart from others is that there are absolutely no fillers in my products. The herbal powder blends are simply that – herbs powdered then blended together. I stay away from sugars, preservatives, dyes, etc.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
So many other people deserve credit in the growth of Wild Sun Wellness. Both of my teachers, JoAnn Sanchez, RH and Brittney Sounart, RH. I learned patience, how to be in the herbal world and how to connect with the plants from JoAnn.
Brittney taught me so much and continues to teach me. She has been my mentor for a couple of years now, and I have learned how to work with people one-on-one from her, I have learned an incredible amount of how the body works and how herbs work in the body. She has also been a huge support for me just in everyday life, aside from the herb world. I like to think of her as my personal Herbal Goddess, constantly there to support me along my way, whatever it is I decide to do.
I’ve had tons of support from my parents and siblings. I come from a very entrepreneurial family – my parents opened up the Queen Creek Olive Mill back in 2005. Not only are they incredibly inspirational, but they also helped me get started with business banking, accounting, insurance, and have been great resources for almost any questions and hard decisions I’ve had to make.
My graphic designer/ best friend Katherine Gatz who has donated so much time to helping shape the image of the brand that is Wild Sun Wellness. I would also say that all of my close friends have been extremely supportive as well throughout the year!
