Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Marchand.
Jill, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a native to central Phoenix and have lived here for the majority of my life; currently living and working within a mile from each other, right in the very neighborhood I grew up. I opened Wax Appeal in June of 2014, offering wax and electrolysis services to women and men. Working for myself has truly been a dream of mine since I was a child. Back in 2010 I enrolled in the Natural Aesthetics program at the Southwest Institute of Natural Aesthetics in Tempe. Prior to this, I had earned a bachelor degree from ASU in Art History and had spent a number of years trying on different hats at corporate jobs and small businesses, performing a range of duties. Nothing felt like it fit my soul’s purpose. I wanted to be free to be my true self, every hour of the day, not just in the off-duty hours. I went back to school to gain my aesthetics license because I felt it would give me a physical skill in which I could work with people one on one, intimately. After licensure, I applied for a position I assumed involved giving facials and other skin care treatments. I was soon informed the position was for a full time body waxer. I lit up! This was perfect for me; in fact, toward the end of my program at SWINA I had begun to enjoy the facial process less and less and had gravitated towards body waxing. My new boss became a great mentor to me. She had been in the waxing business more than 40 years and I soaked up her knowledge like a sponge. I learned proper speed waxing technique, became very experienced in understanding hair patterns and growth, and was trained in electrolysis. I spent 4 years in that position, building confidence and a loyal clientele. In 2014, I opened Wax Appeal and have been fortunate enough to continue experiencing consistent growth with the help of Yelp and constant referrals. My services cater to those individuals who desire a private, intimate, laid-back setting. I am by appointment only, open Monday thru Saturday. My work is very special to me; it feeds my soul on a deep level and I am grateful to be myself every hour of every day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working for yourself in a service industry can be challenging because you are constantly riding the waves of business highs and lows. Waxing services are located all around me in North Central Phoenix and I have to constantly remind myself that there is a client base for all of us. What I offer may not meet the needs of one client but it may be just what another is looking for. Also, in my experience I’ve seen that Phoenix is a very transient city, which means I am often saying goodbye to clients who move away for work or other reasons. Saying goodbye is never easy. Otherwise, it’s been a fairly easy road.
Wax Appeal – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wax Appeal offers hair removal to women and men (above the belt) as well as electrolysis services (mostly facial hair removal). I use soft wax exclusively as I find it removes all hair types effectively and is easy to maneuver.
Eyebrow waxing is probably my most popular service as most people who wax are most familiar with this service. I do however wax any part of the female body. I do very much enjoy shaping brows and receive regular positive feedback from clients. I am proud of my customer service. I do as much as I can to accommodate my client’s needs, from booking flexibility to skin sensitivities and service preferences. I do what I can to let them know I listen to them and I care about them individually. I truly feel like day in day out, I am just spending time with my friends, giving them a service they need. My clients truly mean the world to me; each and every one of them. This may set me apart. I take part in every aspect of the business. I take the appointment, I offer the service, I check them out and re-book them. They only deal with me. It’s a very personal service.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My reviews on Yelp have blown me away. Every time I get a new review and I read how happy my clients are with their service and experience, my heart swells. It gives me purpose.
