Meet Dr. Jessica Peterkin of Breton Family Dental

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jessica Peterkin.

Dr. Peterkin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I selected dentistry as a career in high school. I wasn’t 100% sure, but I certainly loved the way my childhood hygienist used to educate and build relationships with patients. She was my inspiration to pursue all that I have.

After high school, I attended the GREAT Bethune-Cookman University (BCU) in Daytona Beach, FL on an academic scholarship majoring in Chemistry/pre-dental studies. During the summers, I participated in many science-based internships to expand my knowledge. Of those, there was one that changed my life—further solidifying my decision to pursue dentistry; Summer Medical & Dental Enrichment Program (SMDEP), a program designed to expose underrepresented minorities to careers in medicine. For six amazing weeks, I attended the University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston as I was richly immersed in all things medicine and dentistry…and from then—I pursued it whole-heartedly.

Shortly after graduating from the honors program at BCU, I enrolled in a health science program to strengthen my dental school application. In one year, I conferred a Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences and then went on to Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine- Illinois as a member of the inaugural class! After successfully completing hundreds of tests, board exams, licensure, clinical assessments, externships, and rotations, my dream was finally realized! It was an outer body experience to hear my name called as I walked across the stage to be hooded and to obtain what I had worked so hard for the previous nine years…Jessica Brereton Peterkin, Doctor of Dental Medicine.

And that is just the beginning!

I moved to Arizona to begin my career, taking a jurisprudence exam and applying for my Arizona state license. For the next several years, I worked as an associate in diverse settings including corporate, small group, public health, and even private dental practices. Through those experiences, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in practice and patient management as well as specialized care for specific patient populations including Native Health, underserved communities, the homeless, wealthy, geriatric, pediatric, and so much more. I was interested in educating and treating patients throughout every stage of life customizing care for their specific needs.

My passion for people and families was ignited and I knew that family practice was my ultimate goal. In 2018, Breton Family Dental was formed, however after surveying the market, I decided to wait sometime to pursue finding a “home” and hanging my figurative “shingle”. By divine appointment, one year later, opportunity met preparation. I found a home that was converted into a dental office by Dr. Michael Levy nearly 40 years ago. After renovating and obtaining a talented team to help build our brand, I was ready to begin serving my community.

I, Dr. Jessica Brereton Peterkin, opened the doors of Breton Family Dental on June 6, 2019!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When reading biographies, it’s almost like a highlight reel—we only hear about the good.

There was absolutely a struggle but it only made me stronger. From having to retake dental admissions test, receiving rejection or waitlist letters during the dental school application cycles, poor performance on an exam (or two), the list goes on…and that was just in my educational pursuit!

Anything worth having is worth fighting for. I have dealt with so many obstacles and have overcome so many barriers in order to make it to where I am, and I’d be a fool to believe that the battle is over. I do know where my help comes from though, so that is what gets me through each day into the next! My faith in God, my amazing support system in my husband and family has pushed me, encouraged me, and lifted me even in my darkest hours. They empower me to know that in all things, I am victorious!

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
Breton Family Dental is dentistry for the family, by the family. We make our patients feel at home and always welcomed. Through customized care and empowering patients to make informed decisions, we pride ourselves on taking time to explain patient needs in detail so that they may be knowledgeable about what is necessary to maintain optimal oral health.

In addition, it is our goal to serve beyond our four walls and go out in the community. We do so by engaging in outreach, conducting oral health screenings, homeless feedings, Back2School drives for students and teachers, and so much more. We genuinely have a heart for the community and know that as we continue to grow, we are blessed to be a blessing. So that shall we do!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
One of our biggest initiatives, outside of becoming the best family dental office in Phoenix (of course) is giving back to our Arizona Educators. My husband, Tavious Peterkin, is a dedicated educator and I also have a younger brother who is as well. The compassion that these educators have to better our children and equip them for life is remarkable. I do not feel that they are appreciated or respected enough despite being the cornerstone of our children’s future. We are ALL products of an educator’s countless hours of sacrifice.

#ReachATeach campaign was born out of my desire to give back and show my appreciation to these very special people. This year we kicked it off with five days of giveaways, partnering with local businesses including the Arizona Opera as an incentive to raise awareness about our Back2School drive for our teachers. We have only been in business less than 90 days, but this year, along with our donors, we were able to sponsor four teachers with essential items to run their classrooms.

Throughout the year and specifically In May 2020, we would like to continue showing our love for teachers in a day of service.

We also enjoy hosting special giveaways and events for the general public. I advise any and all who would like to participate to follow our Facebook page. We even have some special announcements coming up soon for the month of September so stay tuned!
