Meet Jessica Aguilar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Aguilar.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I was always determined to be the first. Initially, my sights were set on being the first in my family to graduate from college. Everything was going according to plan when I was accepted to Arizona State University. Halfway through the second semester of my freshman year, life happened. Literally. I had my son during what would have been my first semester as a sophomore.

Still determined to be the first, when my son was 10 months old, I decided to go back to ASU and completed another two years on the road to being ‘first’. Then, life happened again. This time, I had to choose between working a full-time job to help support my family or quitting my job and dedicating all of my time to completing my degree. Conflicted with whether or not I was on the right career path, I dropped out.

I was not the first in my family to graduate from college. I have spent the last 11 years working in Corporate America. I currently work for a very successful company as a Sr. Manager of Learning and Development. For years, I have been so consumed by climbing the corporate ladder to make up for what felt like a failure that I struggled to find things outside of work that brought me joy.

When COVID-19 hit and we were sent to work from home, it didn’t get any better. A year in, I yearned for more. I started exploring different hobbies and looking for creative outlets. In January of 2021, I was the first in my family to start their own small business, Dusty Jade Designs – a luxury picnic and event company servicing the Phoenix area.

Through my business, I have learned that life will take you down different paths and there will be many ‘firsts’ but what is most important is that you find joy in what you are doing. Today, I find joy through my day job and Dusty jade Designs where I get to stretch my creative muscles, partner with other small business owners, and inspire those around me.

I am embracing and have found a new appreciation for all of the firsts and failures in this new adventure.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If I have learned one thing in Corporate America it is emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

When my son is faced with a challenge, I remind him that our attitude is everything and embracing the emotions we feel is healthy as long as we follow it up with a deep breath and an action plan.

We all are faced with obstacles in everything that we do. They are what makes each of our stories unique and success so much sweeter, so bring it on!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
