Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Esposito.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for design has always been a huge driver in my life. I was fortunate enough to travel around the world and experience a range of art, design, and culture at a young age. Early on, I knew design was something I was meant to pursue and Parsons School of Design in New York City was my first step to fully discover how I would incorporate design into my life.
Throughout my time at Parsons, I was introduced to all facets of being an entrepreneur, which included not only the business aspects but also the creative. Eventually, my goal was to own and design my own business. But before doing so, I decided to dive into as many industries as possible from fashion and interior design to luxury goods and wine. It was important for me to experience as many industries and companies as possible– both large and small–to truly understand what it would take to build and operate my future business.
In 2014 I decided to take a major leap, leave what I knew, and moved to California. It was also during this time that I took a trip to Ischia, an island off the southern coast of Italy. My father, who is originally from Naples, would vacation there as a child and so we went back to experience his childhood summer vacation spot as a family and to reconnect with an island that meant so much to him. It was during this trip that I was introduced to one of the true treasures of this island, the beautiful thermal springs that surround the island. These springs were the impetus for me to finally start my own business, a business based on healing; something I needed for myself at that point in time.
Having been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease many years prior, my body had been screaming at me for years to pay attention, slow down, and begin looking inward– but I had always ignored it. However, one of the largest stressors I was unable to avoid was the acne that I developed in my mid 20’s. Up until this point, I had struggled to find anything that would help relieve the issues with my skin. It wasn’t until I stepped into my first thermal water spring in Ischia that I saw my skin and body begin to heal.
Shortly after this trip, I began reflecting back on my strong connection with Ischia and the fact that for the first time since being diagnosed my skin finally began to calm. It was then that I realized that if this thermal water could give my extremely sensitive and stressed skin the relief I had been searching for, then others could certainly benefit immensely from it as well. And so it began, I moved to Arizona to set up the business and the journey began to create a line of skincare products to bring this truly healing water to as many people as possible. My first order of business was gaining exclusivity to a thermal spring on the island. Next, I worked tirelessly to create a supply chain in order to ensure the entire line of products were produced, manufactured, and created in Italy. After three years of incorporating all my prior experience in design and business and learning the ins and outs of a new industry, D’Isolana Skincare was launched in 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to launching D’Isolana Skincare has had several bumps. One of the most difficult was securing exclusive rights to the ideal spring on the island. From there, some of the main challenges were centered around the logistical difficulty of producing a line of products on the island.
We needed to source each component and set up a logistical strategy in order to effectively ensure that each piece of the chain would not only be able to produce but deliver what was needed on time for assembly. Setting up this chain took time and each milestone of production had its own small bumps along the way.
Being based in the US, it took many trips each year to not only develop relationships with each manufacturer but also to spend time perfecting each product. Doing business outside of the states and in a country like Italy, it was important to make adjustments throughout the process to adhere to different regulations and time schedules. At times it was difficult not to be closer and on the ground working side by side the manufacturers. Communication was extremely important and having patience during each stage was crucial due to delays and distractions caused by the yearly schedule of the island’s influx of holiday visitors.
Please tell us about D’Isolana Skincare.
D’Isolana Skincare simplifies beauty by creating extraordinarily pure and effective products and skincare rituals to restore the radiance of one’s skin. Turning back to nature, we’ve harnessed the power of thermal water to create products to nourish all skin types.
The active, natural ingredients of our thermal water work in harmony with the body’s chemistry and natural PH levels. Situated in the mountains, separated from seawater, our water interacts with the natural elements of volcanic soil and existing habitat resulting in thermal water high in bicarbonate, which allows for and accelerates the life cycle of cell renewal. This is extremely helpful in healing certain forms of dermatitis and burns, as well as aiding in youth preservation. The high bicarbonate and low sodium percentage also allow us to utilize more thermal water itself in each and every one of our nine products.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The childhood memories that have stuck with me the most and always bring a huge smile to my face would most definitely be from the time I spent as a child living in New Zealand. It was a time I reflect back on often. There was amazing energy there that I connected with immediately and a place where I felt free to truly be myself. The adventures we took from the spontaneous week-long trips to the countryside, to the beautiful seaside parks we would visit after school, and the friendships I made have always stayed close to me. These are the memories I bring with me each day when I need a moment to meditate or come to a challenging crossroads in both my business and personal life.
