Meet Jeff Hoodzow of Best Deal in North Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Hoodzow.

Jeff, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We’ve been in business since 2008, I’ve been with the company since 2010. We didn’t really start a TV store, so to say. We bought an open box TV online since we couldn’t find a good deal locally, and someone liked the TV more than we did, so we sold it to them. Then we bought 3 TVs, sold them, bought 5, etc, until we got too big to run out of a house, so we opened a small store near our current location in Tempe. We eventually moved to a larger spot in Tempe, then opened up other locations in Denver (about 4 years ago), Las Vegas (about 2 years ago) and Scottsdale, (about 6 months ago), now we sell about 1200-1500 TV per month company-wide and are expecting total sales this year to be right around $10 million.

Has it been a smooth road?
Obviously, we don’t have the same business model as a Best Buy or Costco, and we are relatively small, (Wal-mart’s revenue in 2016 was about $485 billion dollars, so they do our annual sales in about 10 minutes) but those are the business we compete against on a daily basis. We’ve grown from having 1 employee (I was the first regular employee) to almost 30

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Kind of went through the what we do- but in short, we sell open box, overstock and refurbished TVs from retail stores and other general consumer electronics that fall into a similar description. We also specialize in Apple product, mainly corporate and educational lease returns.

Personally, my title is Chief Operating Officer and VP of Business Development and Commercial Sales (I wear a lot of hats). To copy and paste from my linked in page, Manage the day-to-day operation of Best Deal in Town, an independent, consumer electronics store specializing in discount TVs, TV accessories and computers. We have four stores, with two in Arizona, one in Nevada and one in Denver.

* Primary buyer of HDTVs and Apple Products, including maintaining relationships with current suppliers and finding new supply chain avenues.
* Maintain and grow Best Deal in Town’s commercial sales department. Our commercial sales include bars & restaurants, churches, hotels + much more throughout the country.
* Manage sales and needs to wholesale and install customers.
* Handle short term and long term Social Media demands, including advertising strategies, customer interaction and website maintenance.

MOST PROUD OF- I would say how we’ve been able to grow so much in a short period of time, from selling TVs out of a house to the 4 stores in under 10 years. We dominate on social media, and between out 3 states, we have over 60K followers, all organically grown.

I think the biggest thing that sets us apart from other stores that sell TV is our customer service and knowledge. Good luck going to a lot of other places and actually getting answers, compared to someone who can just read a tag and write you up. We don’t wear shirts and ties, we are pretty laid back, but customer service is number 1

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
In our short time in Scottsdale, we love it, simply because no one really bothers us. In Tempe, their business relationships with the government I would define as short-sighted and not very businesses friendly. Tempe needs to take the time and talk to small business and work with us, not against us.
