Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayd Hernandez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jayd. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Los Angeles and spent most of my time wandering through Venice Beach and the Santa Monica promenade where I watched street performers, magicians and gypsies entertain crowds of people. Like them, I was moved by art, music, self-expression and the hustle to make it big, I just didn’t know what my unique talent was…
And so began my journey in exploring a variety of businesses from interning at Interscope records to public relations, and then entrepreneurship. I’ve started a handful of businesses, including a promotional modeling agency, marketing media company, airbrush tanning, intimacy coaching and now cosmetic tattooing.
It took me a while to figure out that starting businesses is my art form, and that making people feel good is my special talent.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Gosh no, but I think that’s all part of the process of learning a business. No one enters entrepreneurship with straight A’s, but rather an openness to be challenged, humbled, and to evolve.
It’s not easy waking up everyday confronting your doubts and fears, but you do it anyway.
When I was younger, I didn’t know how to respond to my own self-doubts and because I was a ‘lone-wolf’ doing it all by myself, I failed many times. Now that I’m wiser and more self-aware, I’ve made sure to cultivate a solid support system. What that looks like is having two partners that I genuinely respect and trust to help keep me accountable and eight collaborators who I can bounce off ideas from. Literally, my support system entails ten people who I can call or text at anytime when I need help.
Being an Entrepreneur can easily feel lonely and very singular, which leads to narrow perspectives and hinders growth, so it’s imperative to have people around you who believe in you and can help broaden your perspective. They don’t need to be in the same business as you, but they do need to respect it and support it. I can’t tell you how much this helps me on a daily or weekly basis mentally and emotionally. Feeling like I don’t have to do this all by myself is so reassuring and encouraging, and I think that’s the opposite of how most entrepreneurs feel on their journey.
Please tell us about Studio Skalp.
Studio Skalp is a cosmetic tattoo studio that offers non-invasive, permanent solutions for hair loss, and stretch mark and scar camouflage.
We’re also the first company in Arizona certified and trained in the famous Brazilian stretch mark and scar camouflage.
Because our treatments are so innovative, we really strive to educate our clients about the benefits of cosmetic tattooing and offer free consultations over the phone with no pressure to book.
We understand hair loss, scars and stretch marks can be areas of great insecurity and so our number one priority is to be a resource to people. Whether or not they hire us, they’ll have the information they need to make an informed and confident decision.
Behind the visual aesthetics of what we do, there’s a whole lot of genuine effort in trying to figure out how to make people feel good.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve studied and practiced patience more. I think as an Entrepreneur, you’re more focused on forward movement, getting things done, and the pressing matter of time and timing, but I’m learning (still) that patience is a virtue.
Having the patience to build a business actually affords you more time, and sometimes even more money.
