Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason W Whalen.
Jason W, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a passion for fitness. Even when I was young and involved in sports, I always enjoyed the training aspect that came with playing sports, especially the weight training part of it. However, it was my dad’s passing my freshman year in college that really played the biggest factor in me wanting to pursue a career in fitness and health. I had made my mind up even then, this is what I was meant to do.
After receiving my degree in Exercise Science from the University of Eastern New Mexico, I then moved to Arizona to pursue a career in the fitness and health world. However, as they say, nothing in this world worth pursuing comes easy and after a few ups and downs, I finally got the opportunity I needed. My business partner gave me an opportunity to use the studio connected to the house I was living in as a fitness studio. At first, I was not sure how it would go. This was different than how I had originally planned it out in my head. All I had at the time was a few rusty dumbbells and an exercise bike. It was then my business partner convinced me that I will have to work with what I have and understand that clients are coming to me because of my talents in helping them reach their goals. More about my training technique and less about the equipment.
As time progressed and I started to build up my clientele, I would update my gym. Not with trending exercise machines but with more free weights mainly as I still today strongly believe that one doesn’t need fancy machines to reach any goal in fitness and health. Rather, the important concept is understanding the technique and form to each exercise, the method behind exercise. With proper form and progression
through free weights and calisthenics, any goal in fitness and health is achievable.
I have been very fortunate to do what I love for over ten years now and I have had the honor of meeting many great folks in that process. Nothing is more fulfilling as a trainer than to see clients who have worked with me over the years put in the hard work and then see the results they have worked so hard for coming into play. Results can come in many forms but what I always try to emphasize and practice with my clients and myself when it comes to exercise, is that no matter the goal, health should always come first.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business owner, small or big, understands that there are always going to be struggles. As a small business, there is really no off days as when your not training, you are taking care of other small businesses matters, working to keep clients motivated, as well as always promoting your business to keep afloat. Although I do believe most understand today how important exercise and nutrition is to their health, It is still not always thought as a necessity. My passion and awareness of how important these concepts are, is what keeps me motivated to spread the word of fitness and to go through the struggles that sometimes come from running a small business. A fitness and nutrition plan is really an investment in one’s health.
Please tell us about JWWFITNESS.
As a certified training, I offer programs in all the components of fitness; Strength, Cardiovascular endurance, Muscular endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition. Since my studio consists mainly of free weights, Jungle gym straps, and a few exercise balls, I primarily specialize in strength training with free weights and free bodyweight training (calisthenics) along with High interval training (HIIT). I believe not one size fits all when it comes to exercise, so what sets my studio apart from gyms is that all my fitness programs are specialized to my client’s goals and fitness level.
Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Knowledge in what you do is, of course, an important quality to have to be successful. Obtaining a degree in Exercise Science and continuing education through National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), has helped me to have success in what I do. However, it is the hands-on experience that comes with working with others that has also really played a big part with me helping others reach their goals in fitness and health. It is one thing to know how to workout yourself but it is a completely different ball game when it comes to training others. Over these years of training, I have worked with clients with many different training backgrounds, injuries, and surgeries. Through this, I have learned more specifically how to adjust one’s fitness program so they can still reach their goals and see results without risking serious injury.
