Meet Janet Semenova and Angela Rice of Boutique Travel Advisors in Paradise Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Semenova and Angela Rice.

Boutique Travel Advisors (BTA), started as a passion project for Janet and Angie, born out of their joint love of travel. Their paths first crossed while watching their children play sports together and they quickly recognized that their perspective and outlook on life would form a wonderful foundation for a business partnership. Founded in 2017, the firm has seen rapid growth and national recognition. Co-founders Janet and Angie have won awards, been featured on local television and written up in multiple publications. At the core of BTA is the belief that travel is a gateway to deepening human connection and one’s understanding of the world.

Janet was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and spent the first eight years of her life living in the former Soviet Union. She inherited her passion for travel from her mother and has been dedicated to raising her children to become citizens of the world. She is confident that prejudice, bigotry, and fear are traits that are taught to our children through ignorance. By showing them that the world is full of wondrous colors, cultures and immense beauty we can eliminate the bias and support them in creating a more inclusive, tolerant and understanding world. Janet’s love of travel has taken her to over 30 countries, many of which she returns to time and again to explore further and delve deeper. After a decade of working as a nurse practitioner taking care of critically ill children, she decided that she wanted to share her passion for travel and exploration and help families maximize their time together. Knowing that life can be full of uncertainties she believes that travel is one of the most meaningful ways to connect with our families. By assisting clients in navigating the challenges of planning unique and engaging itineraries while bypassing the stressors that often accompany the process she encourages them to venture further and take on new experiences.

Angie grew up in a large Italian family in a small town outside of Chicago but has always had a desire to explore the world. She has lived in Spain and travels yearly to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. Her favorite destinations include Austria, Spain, Costa Rica, Italy, Ireland and coastal regions of the US. Prior to co-founding BTA, she enjoyed a 15 years career as a forensic accountant and corporate consultant. Using the skills she honed throughout her successful accounting tenure she guides clients to make fiscally responsible travel decisions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Janet and Angie admit that starting a business has been both immeasurably rewarding and incredibly challenging. While they help their clients find ways to connect, unplug and form meaningful experiences both women report difficulties with work-life balance. Having school-aged children while starting a new business and having to travel internationally to meet suppliers and preview properties has put pressure on their families and created imbalances in their life over the past several years.

Another challenge has been managing expectations and relinquishing control. While it is possible to curate a picture-perfect itinerary on paper, surprises and challenges often arise while traveling. Flight delays, poor weather conditions, language barriers, and cultural differences can all pose difficulties for the clients and advisors.

There are never enough hours in the day to accomplish it all but through a strong partnership and mutual respect, they are working on setting boundaries and creating more time for themselves and their loved ones.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
