Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Neustedter.
Hi Janet, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I worked in the restaurant business my entire life. I call myself a restaurant trained chef. I am married and have 3 children, 18 months apart. I was a stay-home mom, and always explored, learned and experimented with food. I have also always been a healthy person, and always have exercised. My food has always focused on healthy items. 10 years ago while on a bicycle I fell and crushed my shoulder. This accident was the opening to my life in the healthcare industry. I ended up working for the physical therapy place where I went to rehab my shoulder, and from there worked for a doctor. The doctor is very innovative and has investigated Functional Medicine.
I had never heard of Functional Medicine, and became intrigued. Functional Medicine looks to get to the root cause of illness, rather than symptom treatment. For example, if you go to the doctor for stomach issues, your doc may run some tests and prescribe a medication. The medication may work, but if you go off of it, the stomach issues may come back. That is symptom treatment. A FM doctor may want to look at diet, stress, sleep, etc., known as lifestyle factors.
I became so excited, that I could take my food background and merge it with the field of functional medicine! I got certified to become a FM Health Coach, and have been seeing clients ever since, about 4 years now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I worked in the doctors office at first, for a year. I loved coaching and decided I did not want to do the other duties I had on staff, so I quit and “hung my shingle” working out of my home. Being an entrepreneur is difficult, and requires a lot of discipline. I was giving talks in the community about self-care, or inflammation, autoimmune causes… I had built up a good clientele, and was also doing cooking demonstrations in the community.
Covid hit and my clients all quit within a few weeks. People were scared about their income, and put their health on the back burner. I used the quiet time to write and create for my business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Here4You Health Coach?
I help people to identify, shop and prepare healthy foods so they can feel amazing. I specialize in people that have auto-immune disease. I know food inside and out. I have done and continue to do research in what foods are healthy and where to get them. When people come to me that are overweight or have autoimmune disease, the first step is looking at what is going in the mouth! Then we look at lifestyle factors such as stress, sleep, mindfulness, exercise and social connectedness. Covid pulled people apart, and people are lonely. I am proud that I have created many cooking videos, have a YouTube channel, and know what ingredients are in foods that are making people sick, fat, and basically unhealthy. I coach couples or one on one, to help people achieve their goals of being healthy.
I have a 90 day program called A Lifetime of Healthy Habits. I do not think diets work, challenges are good for a short time, calorie counting is too restrictive. Learning Healthy Habits people can have the tools to always feel better.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Every person is different. Every person has a journey that they are on. Listening to clients needs and supporting them on their journey has been very rewarding. Helping to educate people about food is my passion and joy. I am privileged to have been able to meet and learn about many people’s journey to better health.
