Meet Janelle Yoder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Yoder.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The dream of owning a candle company has been a few decades in the making! When I was in the 3rd grade, my Dad and I had (somewhat randomly) talked about starting a candle business, he even took me to look at a little candle shop that was for sale at the time! So, a few years ago when I was looking for a hobby – candles quickly came to mind! Those first few attempts at candle making were somewhat disastrous 🙂 But after A LOT of trial and error, Ellery Mae Candle Co. was born! Soon after, on September 10th (which also happened to be my Dad’s birthday) I opened my online shop! And just over four years later, this little shop that began as a hobby/creative outlet has turned into a passion and full-time business. The fact that this is now my “job” feels like some kind of magical dream & I am so grateful to be able to create something that I love every day!

Please tell us about your art.
I am a Chandler (a.k.a. a candle maker) inspired by simplicity and a deeply rooted love of handmade goods.

One of my favorite elements of candles is the different memories/feelings that a particular scent can evoke! My hope is that when a customer lights one of my candles in their home, it will not only set the mood/feeling of the room, but that it will bring back memories, or set the tone for new ones to be made! Each and every one of my candles are hand-poured with 100% all-natural soy wax, woven cotton wicks, and high-quality fragrance oils to create a clean, long-lasting, and eco-friendly burn.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
If you can, get involved with local craft fairs/markets! The handmade community here is nothing short of amazing, and I have met some of the most incredible and inspiring people by selling my candles at local events! Not only do you get to meet your customers in person (which is the BEST!), but you are able to connect with other makers who understand exactly what you’re going through!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
There are two absolutely wonderful local shops that carry my candles – Out of the Blue AZ in Glendale, and Everything Goes in Phoenix! You can also find me at local handmade markets throughout the year, including Made With Love Gilbert, which I am at just about every other weekend!
