Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Sheppard.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Janelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While I’ve been a certified fitness professional since 2009, I’ve been an expert at outdoor play since elementary school. Raising four children on her own, my mother was a genius at finding affordable ways to keep us entertained and healthy. As a result, we grew up in the public library, local parks and hiking trails.
Many of the fitness experiences and classes I’ve created were born during those years playing in the parks and on the trails with my brothers and sister. Sweat & Sunshine gives me the opportunity to combine my knowledge and experience as a Certified Personal Trainer with my love of nature to help people live healthier lives.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think deciding to start my own business was the difficult part. The rest has been mostly fun. For me, it required more confidence in my abilities than I ever need before. I just kept telling myself that with the creativity my mother instilled, the discipline the military gave me, and the work ethic I had developed throughout my career, I would succeed. In this first year, I’ve certainly had some failures, but mostly I’ve repeatedly proven to myself that I’m on the right track. Overwhelmingly the first year has me excited to do more.
Tell us more about your work.
At Sweat & Sunshine, I provide outdoor fitness experiences that maximize the restorative benefits of natural light and green spaces. I also design and instruct fitness classes that make use of shared open spaces, like parks and preserves.
I’m most proud of the moments when my clients are impressed by what their body can accomplish after the work we’ve done together. A client recently shared that while on her annual family vacation, she was able to stand in the ocean on her own for the first time in years. I beamed with pride at that moment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t put a ton of energy into thinking about good or bad luck, I just roll with the punches of life and stay thankful for the blessing that comes my way.
