Meet Jae Campas of Out The Mud Ink

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae Campas.

Jae, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As far as what I’m doing now, It started during the pandemic. I was working at a recording studio as an Audio Engineer. I also had a part-time job. The studio shut down for a while and I got laid off from my other job due to covid. I had always been into Art as far as painting, drawing, and anything creative. I used to draw on friends and classmates with gel pens and markers when I was younger. I’ve been told I should do tattoos as far back as I can remember but I had other passions that kept me busy. With the pandemic going on I had a lot of free time. One day I was looking at myself and wanted more Tattoos, so I ordered a Tattoo kit online. After doing a couple of them on myself a few friends and family members asked for one. At first, I was hesitant but once I got enough confidence, I did a few. Then more and more people started reaching out. I noticed there was a demand for my Tattoos so I started posting online. Almost instantly I started getting new clients. At one point, a local Tattoo shop recruited me from seeing the work I posted on my social media. I was there for a while helping launch the shop. Once we parted ways, I got together with a couple partners and opened my own spot.

We have been in business for about a year now. There are three full-time artists including myself—all rookies with non-conventional backgrounds. I’ve never done anything in life the traditional way and that’s the approach we take to the Tattoo industry. Getting it out the mud.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Taking the road less traveled is always rough. We’ve struggled in pretty much every way possible. Individuals, artists, friends, family, financially, mentally, physically, everything. I truly believe what doesn’t break you will make you stronger.

We’ve been impressed with Out The Mud Ink, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a Tattoo Shop located on one of the most famous corners in Arizona, 27th Avenue & Indian School Road. Our area has a certain stigma that we’re trying to change for the better—constantly doing community outreach and working with other local businesses to clean up and offer our services in a safe, desirable location—bringing life back to the block. What makes us completely different from other tattoo shops is our culture—catering to the inner city and the upper class. We focus on artists with more potential than experience. Out The Mud Ink is a place where you come for the vibe as well as the service. Comfort and professionalism matched with personality, and raw talent makes us truly unique. We offer black and gray, color, realism, anime, traditional, lettering, etc.; you think it, we ink it! All artists here work with dark skin tones, light skin tones, and everything in between. We are available 7 days a week!

We love surprises, fun facts, and incredible stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
It took me about one year to go from ordering a tattoo kit to opening the tattoo shop.
