Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Castellanos.
Isaac, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my art journey very young always being interested in artwork and creative pursuits. I attended every art class I could find when I was younger and had a real love for it. I started to drift from art and focus on more school/ sports related things as I went into junior high. My passion for art was reignited when I attended the Milan art institutes mastery program for high school students in 2018. The course was once a week every Saturday from 9-2 for eight months. After the course I started selling my artwork in a more professional sense in the summer of 2019. I gained a few commissions and did some works for people on an order by order basis.
At this point, I still hadn’t thought of art as a career. That September I attended the Milan art institutes mastery program and was able to attend even though I was not 18 due to the fact that I had attended classes their before and the owners thought I was focused enough to be a productive member and student in the course. My love for art just continued to grow and grow and before I knew it I had decided that art was what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life. Being only 16 at the time It may have seemed like a bit of a big dream but I began working towards building my business and have been doing so ever since. I’ve now been painting professionally for about two years building my business and fan base through social media and making most of my connections and sales through that as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think with any new business venture no one can say they have only a smooth road. There is definitely a lot of things to manage being only 17 and working as an artist full time as well as being a high school student and that is something I am always balancing and working on perfecting. I also have been working on launching a website for my artwork which has been a project that has had its ups and downs.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a mixed media oil painter. On top of that I would also consider myself a spray paint artist. I think something that sets me apart from other artists is the way I use spray paint in my works in unison with other mixed media and oil painting techniques. Most spray paint artists work almost exclusively in spray paint to create their works. I have tried to in my own work create a bridge between the two styles to highlight spray painting and graffiti style artwork on the canvas as fine art. As far as my work goes I always try to portray a feeling of self-acceptance and a display of power. I enjoy painting wild animals and powerful forces of nature to create very dynamic works of art.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing I would say I was a very happy kid. I always loved art as an outlet to express myself and it was also something I was always able to do unlike more physical activities. When I was younger I had lots of medical struggles and setbacks that kept me from being able to take part in any contact sports or many outdoor activities. I don’t think even with these facts I would say my childhood was anything less than incredible. I always loved and still do love comic books and everything related to them. Marvel and DC comics are something I have been obsessed with forever and have recently gotten into manga and anime. I also loved cooking when I was young and originally planned on being a chef.
- I have sold paintings ranging from as cheap as $25 to up to $3,000
