Meet Holly Miller of CycleBar in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Miller.

Holly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started spinning at a little place called Velocity, back in the day. This tiny studio in Arcadia held about 20 bikes and the classes were always packed! It was 60 minutes of drop-saddle cycling (you don’t sit down during the class!) Some of the students would even take the saddle off the bike before class started!! Once the music started, and we all started pedaling and moving to the beat, I fell in love! I remember driving home from those 5:30am classes feeling completely energized!

I started to find myself thinking about what I would do during certain songs and how I would teach a cycling class, and soon thereafter I got my group fitness certification and Spinning certification. I began teaching at gyms all over the valley. I loved the connection I built with the regular riders and the excitement I felt before every class.

A few years later, boutique cycling studios began to pop up in the Valley and I phased out of teaching in gyms and started to teach exclusively in private studios. In 2016 I was recruited to teach at CycleBar, and the rest is history!

Indoor cycling has come a long way since the days at Velocity. I love all the technology we have at CycleBar, from the CycleStats to the videos we play on our 70-inch monitors, it creates such an incredible experience!

Has it been a smooth road?
What are the obstacles/challenges I’ve faced? I’m glad you asked this question! I am often reminding new instructors that getting started isn’t always an easy process! A good instructor will make teaching look incredibly fun and easy! They will never reveal the disappointment they feel when equipment doesn’t work. They will never show you the hurt they feel when a rider gives a mean comment or nasty feedback or when a rider walks out of class because you are subbing their favorite instructor’s class. A good instructor will keep smiling and motivating even when they don’t feel well or they are going through personal issues. Overall, the time spent teaching and connecting with riders is well worth overlooking the struggles and obstacles, but that’s not to say it doesn’t sting when things like that happen! You just have to smile and focus on the positive impact you have had so many other individuals, and that’s why I do what I do!
