Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Locke.
Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far..
It all began when I attended the University of Tennessee where, as part of their College Scholars program, I was able to design my own major and I chose interactive media.
I quickly managed to gain some interesting internships – one with an online media company and another in game development. It was an exciting time as the industry was rapidly growing and I felt like I was at the forefront of an emerging industry.
After graduation, I moved to Phoenix and started working for Resolutions Multimedia – a boutique development company with a variety of clients from large corporations to small startups.
I then went to work for an agency as an Interactive Project Manager working with many high profile Fortune 500 companies. While this was an amazing experience, I always had a desire to own my own company. I started Hammersmith in 2011, and I have never looked back except to wonder why I didn’t make the leap sooner.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not always… it was definitely a struggle when I started. I had to really focus on building my referral network. I spent a lot time going to events, meeting up for coffees & lunches, and joining groups trying to connect with influencers. Not only was it an investment in time, it was also a financial investment at time when cash flow was very tight.
I also had to build up my customer base before I could afford to hire people to help me. Perhaps my biggest challenge was scaling my business with quality technical resources and people while not draining my financial resources.

Hammersmith Support is a full-service web development company focused on helping clients of all sizes move through every phase of the process: site building, hosting, and maintenance. But most importantly, Hammersmith Support is built on a foundation of close relationships with clients. We seek to know who our clients are, the challenges their company faces, and use that knowledge to build a fresh, engaging, up-to-date website that reflects the organization’s core values and personality.

One of our core values as a company is Giving Back, we currently have one pro-bono client -the Love Up Foundation, but our goal is to support more non-profits as we grow.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love living and building my business in Phoenix. There is a huge small business community and lots of resources available. I love the Local First Arizona organization. They offer networking and educational programs. I’m also a member of Hera Hub Phoenix which is a female-focused co-working space and community. I’ve met amazing people along this journey, and I’m incredibly thankful to the supportive business community we have in Phoenix.
