Meet Hayden Van Hulzen | Owner of HVH Media and Marketing and Twenty One North

Hi Hayden, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
My name is Hayden Van Hulzen and I am the Founder of HVH Media & Marketing and Co-Founder of Twenty One North. After working in marketing for over a decade on the national and global scale in some of the most competitive industries including: automotive, sports, and cosmetics HVH Media & Marketing was born.

I have worked with and developed campaigns with some of the world’s largest influencers, played an instrumental role in evolving several start-up companies into seven figure businesses within the first six months, developed a cosmetics brand for Amazon beauty, and collectively garnered over a billion campaign content views.

My passion is my business, my role as a mother, and empowering other women to invest in themselves and their dreams!

How did you end up in the position that you’re in today?
This question is always far more complex than people give it credit. We remember all of the little moments that shaped us; some were purposeful, some were happy accidents, and some of the most important moments were how we faced failure or adversity. I think people prefer to glamorize the journey to success but it’s not very glamorous.

I am where I am today because of how I overcame some of the hardest times in my life. I would actual credit the hard times with pushing me beyond my comfort zone to think larger than myself and propel myself into greatness.

I still have such a long way to go, but I appreciate how far I have come.

Do you enjoy the work that you do?
Yes. I genuinely believe that loving your work is the secret. I think the most intimidating part about doing what you love for a living, is that you have to be ready to do it as a hobby to start. What I mean by this is we usually love doing something before we know how to make money doing it. But if we continue to talk ourselves out of transitioning to do it solely based on immediate success, then we will never get around to making the leap to start.

Here is me saying, “leap”.

How has COVID changed the landscape of your industry and how have you as a business owner adapted to this change?
COVID humbled many of us, forced us to embrace adaptability, and reminded us that a lot of things could probably be accomplished in a single well-written email.

I think there was a lot of stress that came as a result of COVID but a lot of innovation as well. When times are tough, it forces you outside of your comfort zone and some of our most creative moments occur there.

We were lucky enough to see clients have record months, help keep many businesses afloat during a time where many doors had to close, and we were able to truly remind ourselves internally that we are great at what we do because we are willing to do whatever it takes to make things happen for our clients.

What is your workplace like? How would your employees describe you?
I think my employees would say I am the opposite of a micro-manager. I am extremely hands off because I trust the people that I hire and I feel that empowers them to do some of their best work. It’s sort of an unusual thing to adjust to for some of my employees because I think it’s a little intimidating to have someone give you so much freedom upfront. But I’ve noticed that the right people always rise to the occasion.

I embrace different interests, different learning styles, and different approaches to work. The goal is the goal and I don’t like to get too caught up in the semantics of achieving the goal as long as we continue to win!

They would also tell you that the only thing I care about is that our clients are happy and the work is getting done and done well.

What makes you stand-out from other people in your field?
By physically standing out and taking risks that yield proven results. One of the first things that people do when they are researching a company is look up the people involved. I always find it ironic when someone is telling me that they are great at PR and they themselves have no following, no press and no credibility. This does not build trust.

Me on the other hand, well, I boast a fair social media following on every platform and although there are some unconventional strategies that helped to propel my brand to those numbers, it always at minimum intrigues new potential clients into trusting that I could help them to do the same.

What is up next for you?
Growth. I never want to stop growing and being able to provide a workspace for other entrepreneurial spirits like myself to come thrive, learn, and make a difference.
