Today we’d like to introduce you to Harumi Maejima.
Harumi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Osaka, Japan, I followed a unique path of personal discovery throughout my life. I received a Child Education degree in Fukuoka, Japan and then became an exchange student in the United States.
Afterward, I began a 15-year tenure at the Diplomatic Office of the Japanese Consulate in Boston. It was during these work years there that the high pressure of job responsibilities compelled me to begin a search for methods to combat mental and physical stress, leading to visit my first yoga class in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The physical practice of yoga soon led to further inquiry into its mental and spiritual applications, and I saw a wider view of yoga’s ability to address the “whole person” – it inspired my decision to pursue training as a yoga instructor. Eventually, this holistic viewpoint would evolve into my mission for the studio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In truth, it has not been such a smooth road after I opened the yoga studio. Coming from Japan, with a different culture and background, there were challenges in having my own business for the first time in my life in Arizona.
Gaining trust as a business owner and as a yoga teacher took a long time as there are so many wonderful yoga studios around the area.
Harumi Yoga+ Holistic Healing House and Meditation Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Specialties: The studio offers a unique variety of yoga classes, lectures & workshops as well as very ancient holistic approach modalities, (Acupuncture, Chinese and Japanese Herbal, Chi Nei Tsang, Shiatsu, Sound Therapy, Yoga Thepary, and various Meditation style and more!)
Supporting local artists in the studio lobby, for eight years; hosting receptions to introduce the artists and their work to our community. Our studio also collaborates with our neighboring Farmer’s Market with synergies for healthful living.
Sets us apart:
Focusing on creating a strong, healthy community. We create an atmosphere like no other, clearly reflecting my passion and philosophy of inclusiveness.
Offering much more than yoga classes, the studio is truly a place, “healing house” of acceptance and peace, reflecting our belief that, regardless of age or level, any and all are welcome to enter, to learn, to grow and to heal.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I am not sure what role luck has for me. But I feel I am the luckiest person. It has not been not easy running the studio for the past eight years, however, I am still in business and here! I think just being “me” brought me luck.
