Meet Gary Lasko of The Stockyards Restaurant & 1889 Saloon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Lasko.

Gary, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been working in the restaurant business for 50 years. I have worked most positions in both the front of the house and back of the house. I have both managed and owned restaurants for the past 35 years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have always enjoyed the work. It has always been fun. The only real struggles I have had is when the economy has taken a downturn. Fine dining is one of the first things to suffer when things get tough financially for people.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go The Stockyards Restaurant & 1889 Saloon story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a 70-year-old historic, authentic, iconic landmark Steakhouse in Phoenix. We are certainly known mostly for our hand cut Steaks and Prime Rib. We are very proud of our history and legacy. Being an authentic Arizona independently owned and operated Steakhouse is what sets us apart from all of the other Steakhouses in Arizona, many of which are chains or corporate.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe you make your own luck. I find the harder I work at something the luckier I get.
