Meet Frank Saputo of Balloonatix Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Saputo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I taught myself how to juggle from a book at the age of 16. I would frequent a Presto’s Magic in my neighborhood to buy more books and juggling props. After a while, I quit buying juggling stuff and just start loitering in the store. Always looking to make a sale, Presto suggested I learn how to make balloon animals and sold me a book and bag of balloons. I was hooked! I came back a week later for more balloons and another book. I learned some magic and face painting over next couple of years, as well. However, I love sculpting balloons. I moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1992.

While in college, I found a lady looking to train clowns for her children’s entertainment business. She hired me and helped me develop an act. I would mostly do a magic show, face painting, and balloon twisting for children’s birthday parties. After college. I went out into the real world and worked as a manager for corporate America. I was still entertaining on the weekends and enjoyed it much more than my regular job.

After five years, I told my parents I was quitting my job. My father said,”Sounds wonderful! Just don’t live here with us.” I knew I could make tips by twisting balloons in restaurants, so I looked up balloon artists in the phone book and found Balloonatix. I began twisting four to seven nights a week. I began to meet more balloon enthusiasts, and I was attending balloon conventions. In 2003, I bought Balloonatix and have been running it since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been mostly a smooth road.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Balloonatix Entertainment story. Tell us more about the business.
Balloonatix Entertainment provides entertainment for children’s birthdays, company picnics, holiday parties, etc. We are a family company best known for our large array of balloon sculptures. We also do face painting, juggling, stilt walking, and magic.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was lucky to be working for Balloonatix when it came up for sale. And, I was lucky that the previous owners let me make monthly payments to them interest-free until I paid the company off in a year.
