Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Muhammad Roque.
Fatima, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started as one of the few African American doulas in the state of Arizona over 20 years ago. After finishing up my undergraduate degree at the U of A. The Phoenix Birthing Project offered me a job in Phoenix to work on their Community Based Doula Project and in the organization to help reduce high infant mortality rates in the African American Community.
Years later the organization lost funding and sought out to become a midwife. Today MODABA is a result of the lack of sustainability of our rich organizations of color that focus on families of color and their needs based on the high disparities experienced in and around maternal and child health.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No it has not. Every step of the way has been journey. Each year gets better and better. I see why positive and consistent change can takes 20 years or more. Along the way there are many gems and lots of wisdom gained.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
MODABA stands for Moms, Dads and Babies. That’s what we do. We help families thrive through information, education and support. This is achieved by tele wellness classes, 1:1 tailored support, access to resources, doula support and Homebirth midwifery services. I am known for being one of the Black Birth workers who loves on her community, advocates for them and provides quality care and support.
What were you like growing up?
Grown up, I came from humble beginnings. My mother always spoke into our greatness. Although we didn’t have a lot financially we had a lot of love and a strong spiritual foundation. She kept us close to nature. As a youth I was very free, an ocean girl, traveled every chance I got and was an AMAZING West African Dancer.
