Meet Evaldas Gulbinas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evaldas Gulbinas.

Hi Evaldas, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My name is Evaldas Gulbinas. I love art. From 9 years old I’ve started to go to art schools. Back in Lithuania county (where I born) I’ve completed two art schools. One is “Kedainiai art school” another is “M.K.Ciurlionis National art school in Vilnius city”. Afterward I moved to London. I was a skateboarder as well. I think skateboarding push me to start tattooing. Then I took tattoo apprenticeships and started working through different tattoo parlors as professional tattoo artist. It’s good art form tattooing. As well it pays my rent. Also, I came to London, Uk to study arts. Here I’ve completed foundation diploma in Art and Design in West Thames College. After I have finished, I just got mad. I have been hospitalized in mental hospital. Because I tried to do everything perfect. I mean, in the tattoo studio and in the college… I think I work too hard. I tried to merge them as well. I worked 7 days a week. Even when I was sleeping, I think I was thinking about art things, as well. It was too much information for me in this period. In hospital, I couldn’t talk or communicate or eat. I have seen hallucinations from the medicine, that I was getting. After 1 month in mental hospital, I was good to go and feeling better- they let me go. After I understood that I need to save my energy just for most important things. So, I was okay and was carrying my journey as an artist. After I I’ve completed Bachelor’s degree in Fine art mixed media at University of Westminster, London, Uk. So, in meantime, I was producing artworks for many art exhibitions as well working professionally in tattoo parlors. After I’ve completed Master’s degree in Fine art at Chelsea college of arts in University of Arts London, London, Uk. I always enjoying and working hard to be and live in creative life. My best achievement is that through working as tattoo art in parlors I was able to finish art diplomas and degrees… it was very crazy as I was jumping at the same day from university to tattoo studio and after to art exhibitions. So, I was super busy in arts which I like the most… For me is most important not what I achieved but the technical side how I navigate time and energy to do many things every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“I guess I put everything on fire.” Maybe I was on fire. When I am doing 10 things in arts every day, I just got use to it. For me was painful to lose my personal live as there wasn’t energy or time to hang out with friends and so on. Also in London, I had to change my living place often. So, there was another problems, as my family doesn’t live in London, Uk. But at the end, I’m really happy because I got experience, memories and new possibilities to do something crazy…

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am fine artist. I am making art installations, sculptures, paintings, drawings, mixed media, and multimedia videos. I am producing artwork for an art galleries. As well I am tattoo artist. I do tattoos and work professionally in tattoo parlors. I am proud of myself that I’m capable to be fine artist and tattoo artist. It is kind are mixture. I try to merge tattoo world and fine art worlds. As it’s different venues. I’m different than other because I’m capable to create good tattoos and make great art. I do many things always. I take skills from fine art and added to tattooing or I take skills from tattooing and adding to fine arts. I’m just mixing everything together. I love doing it. There where the energy comes to create for me.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To be careful with friends. As some of them can get jealous what you do or what you achieve. It’s important to choose which are a suitable for you. Also, you have to navigate your energy to the most needed things you need to do. I mean, do not waste energy on parties or so on…
