Meet Erin Swietlik of Energy Ballz in North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Swietlik.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been making energy balls for years as a hobby. I love energy balls because they are a quick healthy snack…grab and go! I would Pinterest a bunch of different energy ball recipes and the most common one was made with dates. To be honest, I am not a big fan of energy balls made with dates because they are too sweet and more on the mushier side. So I would experiment and make balls without the use of dates. After trial and error, I realized my secret ingredient and how to make a good “dough”. A few years ago, I’ve had friends say to me “You should sell energy balls”…I just laughed and said no one is going to buy energy balls. They are simple. Two years ago, I did a 90 day personal growth seminar and one of my goals was to create a Recipe book of Energy Ballz.

During those 90 days, I mastered 20 different energy ball recipes (a few with dates) and created a book with the help of an individual who helps publish books. Along with 20 energy ball recipes, I included 20 workouts and nutrition wisdom and is now a published book to buy. During these 90 days, I was encouraged to sell my balls at a location. As a group fitness instructor, I entertained the idea of one of the gyms I teach at. They had a big grab and go refrigerator for members to purchase drinks and snacks. They loved my samples and agreed to distribute them. This was the beginning of a career I never thought would happen. I now have about 10 accounts…a few yoga/gym studios and healthy grocery stores such as Luci’s Healthy Marketplace and Healthy Habit Health Foods. I just keep growing until I get to the point when I need to hire a team!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve realized being as persistent as possible is key to success. You can’t just call once and expect an answer. I leave samples at a bunch of places and call and email over and over until I get a firm response of a yes or no. Sometimes I feel like I must be annoying the heck out of them, but as most business owners, you are busy and things get pushed to the side and my balls are one of them. I just need to keep staying connected! For instance, I’ve been working on getting into AJs and every time I call, its “give me a few more weeks” well a few weeks go by and I call again. I will continue until I get my YES!

Each time I add an account on, I am jumping with joy and busy making my product. Then once I feel comfortable with the number of balls I am making, I realize okay now I can take on another account and then it’s a whole waiting game again.

Most places, my balls do well right away but there are a few that I need to push a little harder by making the customers aware so I do a lot of energy ball free sampling/demoing to promote the product.

Lastly, quick books after a year ago, I realized to really grow and keep my finances in order, I need quick books and well that’s a big learning curve but I am getting there. My next steps are to think about going completely 100% gluten-free, new packaging, and getting PCU codes (for future big supermarkets). I learn a new thing each time I take on a new account and it only improves my business.

Please tell us about your business.
I do everything for my business. I buy ingredients, make the balls, clean up, package and label, distribute at my accounts and quickbooks. I am a Registered Dietitian and group fitness instructor so I specialize in nutrition and fitness. I teach group fitness classes and provide 1:1 nutrition counseling. I have another business called Balance and Rejuvenate Nutrition Services, LLC.

I am most proud of the fact that what I took as a hobby, I turned into a career. I listened to my peers and took a chance. I am a young mom of two kids so this is my second job. My husband is an entrepreneur too, he owns My Favorite Pool Guy, LLC so we are the family of entrepreneurs and always growing.

I am proud that my product speaks about what I practice and believe in. Whole and raw foods, nothing artificial or toxic. It’s an easy grab and go snack. As a busy mom and business owner, I understand how the quality of food gets pushed to the side and our health declines. I want my product to benefit not only busy individuals but for kids as well! My snack is for the whole family from toddler to the elder. I also realized money can be tight for a family so that is why I didn’t keep my recipes a secret, I created a $20 recipe book so if you want too (most people don’t), you can make at home!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started way sooner…I would have been more confident in myself that I could take such a chance. To be honest, I like how I just took one step at a time and I learn a new thing either how to improve my packaging or marketing each time I get a new account. I really wouldn’t change much except start way sooner.
