Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Shellenberger.
Erik, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was sick and tired of being average. I joined a leadership training group and kind of an Alpha Male led camp of sorts in Utah led by a guy named Sean Whalen. It was incredibly expensive and I signed up with virtually zero indication of what I was getting myself into. It was only described as “An intense mental and physical workout”.I’m working a 9-5 desk job for a bar and restaurant management company and had maxed out my salary range. I was in my early 40’s and this life wasn’t what I signed up for. I was destined for much bigger and better shit.
After training (which was called “Lions not Sheep” so you get the idea of the intensity), I had a fire lit under my ass and jumped all into my side business which was idling along like most people’s “side gig”. Idling. Barely. I know more than most people in the bar and restaurant marketing business and was tired of seeing it done wrong day after day. Entire marketing departments would just go through the motions and there were no Next Level thinkers. No one did their homework nor did they know their numbers.
When I gathered my own numbers, polled the public, ask the right questions and thought on a different level, it started making waves with everyone else in this department and I was the outcast. When I applied these theories to my own clients and had a great, proven system that actually WORKED, I was able to bring in more and more clients of my own easily. I scaled back my 9-5 and went all in with the side gig Bar Marketing Basics which soon became my main gig. I landed some great clients, my biggest one with 15 locations. I was due for an upgrade and decided to pull the trigger on some expensive software to help improve my services and signed up for a year contract. The very next day my big client canceled and all 15 locations were gone overnight.
With the fire still lit and my drive to succeed strong, I got over the discouragement and never looked back. I quickly gained more clients to fill in the gaps. I’ve been doing national podcasts and growing not only in Scottsdale but nationwide. Business is booming more than ever. My 9-5 may come to an end soon, I just don’t have the time or patience to go through the motions of being average. There is way more out there than a desk and a computer!

I do search engine optimization and reputation management for bars and restaurants. I focus on what actually brings people in the door! Everyone else can focus on social media, I’ll stick to what works.
I’m proud of not using the accepted “rulebook” of bar marketing and instead of doing my own research and drawing my own conclusions. This is what truly sets me apart from the herd.
