Hi Emmett, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
I am a realism painter, based in Glendale, Arizona in the United States. I do cultural research and explore different places, gaining my inspiration by combining what I see and research. My aim is to capture an image that invokes an emotion and expresses duality through the medium of oil paint with brushes and rags.
So, I am sure many of our readers who are also writers or creators would be interested to hear how you overcome creators block?
The way I overcome creators block, is several different ways, one I go outside and look around, look through social media at different images, or grab a sketch book put on some Lo-Fi music and start with a simple basic drawing of a flower pot or stick figure and just keep going drawing random simple objects until something clicks.
How do you decide what will be your next series of paintings?
The way I decide what will be my next series of paintings is by picking a topic or an everyday item and do some research. The topic or Item I choose may not be interesting to me, so then pick something else until I find something that is interesting and then I see how that topic or item can be connect to portraits of people or still life imagery.
When you decide on your next series, is it just that series or are their other series you have in mind?
No, it is not just one series, sometimes I have another series written down to follow the one I’m working on or multiple series written down that I can build from, sometimes I look at what I wrote down for a series and get rid of it and sometimes while working on a painting, I will think of a new series to work on next and write that down.
What is the one common trait your artwork portrays?
The common trait that all my art work portrays is the use of lighting and an element of duality. After all, how would we know what day was if there was no night, one cannot exist without the other.
What is the new series you are creating now and what’s the inspiration?
The new series I’m working on now are black and white portraits with a touch of color. the inspiration came from the topic of perception. How an individual or a group of people can believe or be made to believe what is truth through the manipulation of information, video, and photography. today’s society there is so much information available that is becoming difficult to find what is factual and what has misleading. That is why I am doing portraits of black and white with a touch of color. when someone sees the paintings their perception of it or how they see it will be different from someone else all because of either a lack of color or just a touch of color. The same way a person or a group of people can believe something different with just a touch of information.
