Meet Emerald Woodland of Help in Hand App in West Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emerald Woodland.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Emerald. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Los Angeles, California and have worked in education for the past 11 years. Throughout my career in education, I have served as a special education teacher, access counselor and instructional coach.

I recently graduated from ASU with a Doctorate in Leadership and Innovation. During my doctoral studies, I met my co-founder Allison. Help in Hand was born one night when we were supposed to be studying for our statistics class at ASU, but instead were talking about how great it would be if there was an app to use for planning student interventions instead of having to use an outdated, bulky manual. We created a website, executive summary and pitch deck that night and submitted our application to ASU’s Venture Devils. We were accepted to the program a few weeks later and have been invested in this passion project ever since. We’ve learned a lot as first-time female business owners and look forward to learning even more!!

Has it been a smooth road?
I would say that the largest struggle has been helping people outside of the field of education understand the imperative nature of our product. There are so many students who do not learn the standard way and others that do not grasp something the first time it is taught. Our interventions offer multiple strategies for teaching the same content, thus diversifying students’ opportunities to demonstrate mastery of grade level standards.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Help in Hand App offers standard-aligned small group activities for educators by educators. My co-founder Allison and I have over 20 years of experience in education which uniquely qualifies us to analyze problems and propose suggestions in the field. One of the largest challenges we found is the inaccessibility of a variety of clear and concise strategies for teaching grade level standards. We believe that teachers shouldn’t have to spend time outside of their contracted hours planning for and creating strategies to teach their diverse learners. Our strategies take that guesswork out of the equation and give teachers back their free time. Additionally, our strategies are appropriate for the homeschool parent that wants to ensure their child is on target with their grade-level peers.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Honestly, I love Phoenix and would absolutely say that there is a space for startups and small businesses here.
