Meet Diane Corchado of D.C. Beauty Cut & Color Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Corchado.

Diane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
There are key moments in my life that have been pivotal to getting me to where I am at today. I began my love affair with hair at the age of 9 when we were stationed in Mannheim, Germany where I saw a German hairstylist with bright copper red hair cutting a man’s hair….at that moment I wanted to be her. I never changed my mind or path. When I was 12 years old, I was paid my first $5 on for a finger wave hairstyle from a friend when we lived in Atlanta. After that I was doing my friends hair and my mother’s friends that were in the Army. I won my first hair show competition at the age of 14 when we were back in Germany using a cheap box of blonde hair dye and Kool-Aid. I started cosmetology school at the age of 16 when living in Savannah, GA, I was accepted into the dual enrollment program which allowed me to go to Savannah Tech in the morning and high school in the afternoon. I was licensed at the age of 18 and opened my first small salon at the age of 22 when living in Okinawa, Japan. I began working for a hair care company when I was 27 which opened up many doors. When I moved to Jacksonville, Florida I got my first cosmetology instructor Jon at Riverside Hairstyling Academy and that is when I knew for sure that I was meant to teach and it was more than a job to me. The last 18 years of my career I have in some capacity been an assistant, stylist. esthetician, cosmetology instructor, esthetics instructor, independent contractor, freelance artist, sales representative, salon manager, educator, makeup artist and the best thing…an entrepreneur. I moved to Phoenix in January of this year after leaving Atlanta which is where I consider home. Since I have been here I have opened a studio, got a job teaching at Studio Beauty of Academy in Chandler, joined the hair care company Zotos as a Design Team Member and creating a curriculum of advanced subjects for creative beauty professionals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish…lol…I don’t think I would appreciate what and where I am at without the struggles. I got married young at 18 and had 3 kids before the age of 21. I have been married two times and have a total of 4 kids…ages 18, 16, 15, and 6. I also have gone through two divorces which cause major bumps in the road when still pursuing your dreams and being a mother. I have lost money, time, jobs, friends, and so much that at times I would question why me? At the end of it all to see where I am headed and the opportunities opening I would go through all the pain, struggles, disappointments and loss all over again. I am still on the pursuit and am not going to act as if the struggle doesn’t still exist, the only difference is instead of feeling defeated all the struggles are used as fuel to prove that I can face any mountain and still climb and conquer it. Maybe my story one day will inspire young girls to stay true to their dreams no matter what.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about D.C. Beauty Cut & Color Studio – what should we know?
D.C. Beauty is a color focused studio that not only specializes in healthy hair color for all hair types, textures, ethnicities and races, we also specialize in Brazilian Blowouts, body and facial waxing, and haircuts. We are known for providing very relaxed and down to earth experience.

Our slogan is “Where the EXPERIENCE is real” As a client they are able to truly be themselves without judgement or apprehension. I take the time to listen to the needs of the client and the story that the hair tells me. I prefer to educate them on their level so that the health of their hair is just as important to them as it is to me as their stylist. I like to joke around and laugh A LOT so it is hardly ever a serious visit. I even loosen up the most conservative individuals, that allows me to truly gauge what the client’s needs are that I can address to give them the best possible experience.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence- I am stubborn to a fault, I truly dislike the word No, and I really don’t like losing or giving up. That has allowed me to hear more No’s than Yes, lose more money than I have made, get my feelings hurt by people I looked up to, learn from horrible mistakes as an entrepreneur and stylist. Until I get the result I desire I am like the little engine that could.
