Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Canfield.
Diana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in how the mind works and seemed to have a natural ability to listen and motivate. After being a stay at home mom for about 15 years, I decided to get my Master’s Degree in Counseling. Since 2008 I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have had great opportunities to use my knowledge for different populations along the way. I have worked in: community mental health, adult corrections, juvenile corrections, tribal behavioral health and substance abuse treatment, SMI residential treatment, adolescent behavioral health& sex offender residential treatment, teaching graduate students in counseling at GCU, among others. Throughout that time, I have always had a private practice on the side. In March 2018, I decided to take the jump into full time private practice. It has been an amazing journey and I learn so much from my clients. My specialty is trauma and my main modality is EMDR.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. As a new therapist, there are many hard lessons to learn. One of the biggest lessons is how not to take on the pain of your clients. I had to learn to join the client in their pain in the session, but then let it stay at work when I went home. That is a difficult process to learn. Also, building a private practice can be tough at first, but with time it grows and becomes a great way to make a living.
Tell us about your business.
I provide psychotherapy for teens and adults. I specialize in trauma. However, I also see couples and families along with individuals. I use EMDR in most of my sessions. EMDR is a best practice intervention for PTSD and other trauma. What I am most proud of is the fact that I have been able to bring on contractors and provide supervision for them, along with interns from local universities. I love being able to provide encouragement and training for the next generation of therapists.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As we keep growing, we will need to move into larger office space next year. We will also continue taking on contractors and interns. My future dream is to add animal assisted and equine therapy to my practice.
