Today we’d like to introduce you to DeeDee Hawash.
DeeDee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the owner of Pink Camel Boutique. I am a 3rd generation native to Arizona. For as long as I can remember I have always had a love for fashion and art. My parents were always supportive and encouraged my passion. My summers were filled with joining local art camps and my art cart was always stocked with new colored pencils, chalk, paints, and pastels for sketching. I knew from a young age I wanted to one day own my own business. When I was about 8 years old I started a business called The Deep Blue Sea where I created crafts and home decor. My business cards were made of puff paint on round plastic disks. My number one customers were grandparents and my parents, of course! Continuing the same path, I ended up at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, CA where I graduated with a degree in Visual Communications. While in LA I worked in the world of fashion including Retail, Fashion Show Coordination, Wardrobe Stylist, Visual Merchandising, Brand Rep and now Shop owner for over 15 years. In 2008 tragedy hit my family bringing me back home to Arizona to help care for my mom. My world was turned and so was my career path. Not being able to work a full-time job at first my life brought me to working part time in event planning with Kate Ryan Designs and eventually back to retail. Through these changes and hard times, I met my husband Jamal, also a native to Arizona. We got married in March of 2013 and have since been blessed with 2 kids who keep us busier than ever. My husband and his family come from an entrepreneurial background in both wholesale and retail industries. With both of us knowing the industry so well we knew that we wanted to create something together. After having our second child in 2016 I knew it was time to create something for my family where I could be home more and still fulfill my passion. Thus, Pink Camel Boutique was born. My online shop is dedicated to bringing you the latest fashion and jewels from the Southwest. I also enjoy sharing my other interests like cooking and photography on social media.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the most challenging part is juggling my time between kids and finding the time to take pictures for my site. It was pretty smooth up until the last couple months when my oldest decided she doesn’t need her afternoon nap anymore, which was when I would usually work on my site. Not having a brick and mortar store created a challenge of finding my place in the online world.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pink Camel Boutique – what should we know?
Pink Camel Boutique specializes in high quality handmade Native American Jewelry. Our pieces feature inlay with many detailed designs that keep traditional methods and contemporary style. What sets us apart starts with our selection of design to match the modern woman, creatively displayed and highly engaged in the social community. As my boutique grows so does my selection. I am happy to now carry jewelry by artists from Arizona, New Mexico, and California. I also have been including some handmade pieces by myself. Get to know me through social media where I like to share parts of my life through my Instagram stories and photos.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My passion is to empower women through expressing themselves. I feel every woman should feel confident and beautiful. There’s nothing like walking into a room and seeing heads turn and sometimes a new necklace can do just that!
