Meet David Dodge of CodaKid in Old Town Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Dodge.

David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I spent nearly all of my 20s in Silicon Valley making award-winning video games for the Sony PlayStation, PC, and several Sega platforms. Many years of 100+ hour weeks eventually took their toll, and I decided to return to school and get an MBA. I spent the next decade launching and growing a successful academic tutoring company with a classmate from Thunderbird – who ended up becoming my wife. In 2014, Lauren and I decided we were ready for a new adventure, and decided to launch a company we had dreamed about for years. CodaKid was born.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
From my experience entrepreneurship is never smooth. I’m pretty sure it was Elon Musk who once compared it to eating glass and staring into the abyss.

At CodaKid, we’ve had some real highs and some nerve-wracking lows. The decision we made to bootstrap our venture definitely produced a lot of stress in the early days. We’ve also faced a lot of challenges in understanding what our customers wanted and also in creating a scalable Software as a Service (SaaS) model.

CodaKid – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
CodaKid is an online coding school for kids ages 7 to 15. We specialize in teaching kids how to code using real languages and professional tools, and we teach them how to make things that they are already excited about – like Minecraft mods, Roblox games, mobile apps, 3D video games, and more.

CodaKid now teaches kids in over 60 countries around the globe how to code. We also run camps and classes in Arizona.

What really separates us from our competitors is that our self-paced courses also include support from real teachers over messaging and screen share.

CodaKid now offers an affordable unlimited monthly subscription that gives kids access to all of our courses, including our award-winning Minecraft Mod Creation with Java, Game Development with Roblox, 3D Game Development with Unreal, and more.

CodaKid was named a 2017 CODiE Finalist for Best Coding and Computational Thinking Solution and won a 2017 Parents’ Choice Gold Award from the nation’s oldest non-profit kids product ratings agency.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I am not really motivated by money, as much as I am around the satisfaction of creating things that people love. My vision of success is to create a company that will last well beyond my time here and bring fun, excitement, and even future job prospects to students who take our courses.
