Meet Daniel Hewson of Ascent Audiology and Hearing in Glendale, Surprise, and Goodyear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Hewson.

Born and raised in Western New York, Daniel comes to their practice with over 20 years of experience in the field. With a master’s degree in audiology from SUNY Fredonia, he has extensive experience working in several of the largest Otolaryngology practices in the country, and also as a Regional Manager with Siemens Medical Audiology Division. Father, husband and full-time employee, he is currently a student working to earn his doctorate in audiology; it should be completed by 2018.

Dan was naturally attracted to the field of audiology because he grew up with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss. He has followed hearing aid development, research and rehabilitation. If you want to know what hearing impairment is really about and how hearing devices can change your life, he is the one to ask. He’s been wearing hearing aids since childhood (40 years) and has an intimate understanding of the hearing impaired. His personal hearing device story is fascinating and illuminating for anyone, but especially for those who may be hesitant about the hearing rehabilitation process.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think having hearing loss in general is never simple especially growing up with this obstacle. I think there was always a belief of never fitting in and not feeling anybody understand what I was going through. I know I worked harder to prove to people that I could be just as good as anyone else. I think it is that hard work and determination that has transferred into our practice as there is always a chip on my shoulder to prove to our patients that we are the best and proud of it. We strive to give the patients the real solutions and not just selling them something that does not give them the results. What doesn’t break you will make you stronger. I am a firm believer in never giving up no matter how many times you get pushed down. We can become anything and whoever we want even with a severe SNHL hearing loss.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ascent Audiology and Hearing story. Tell us more about the business.
I am proud of our company because our patient’s success is number one. We are focused on the solutions for our patients and not just selling them something that fails and never measures up to what they are looking for. We focus on patients that have hearing loss, tinnitus issues, balance problems and wax in their ears as we use suction and focus on making life easier. We focus on educating our patients and giving them the solutions and recommendations to solving their hearing problem. We like doing demonstrations with hearing aids to prove that we can fix them and do empirical testing to prove the improvement. We focus on changing their lives. I have always said with my hearing loss my # 1 goal is to focus on the issues they have with their hearing as I have suffered with this for over 40 years myself and I completely understand what they are going through.

We are different because we put ourselves in the patient’s shoes because we want to change their life and make them a person that doesn’t feel left out anymore, lonely, isolate, irritated in conversations, frustrated with the mumblers and allow our patients to hear in restaurants and groups, church and noisy places and they can hear and understand the speech. I am proudest because our patients love the hard work we put into them and they comment on how much we care and always strive to make them better at each appointment that they come to.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Audiology is going to change…. Medicine has changed. We are going to see new advancements in technology that will change the experience of hearing wearers where they will be more adjustments over the phone and more adjustments that the patient will be able to make. The important thing to remember is that we as a society still need people interaction. As robotics takes over the world, the personal touch of patient care will rise greater than ever. I think there will be greater awareness in our field in the next 5 years as more people are exposed to OTC hearing devices that are to hit the field which will allow more people to experience being able to try something for their hearing that is less expensive.

I am certain that people will experience the difference in being able to hear better but not necessarily clearer because in the end it is about proper programming of hearing aids and listening to the patient. Our society is based on needing people and a personal touch and the more alienated people become and the automated our society becomes the more people will want personal attention. It will be interesting times.
