Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Lorefice a.k.a. Giggles.
Cristina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an accredited Counselor with BACP (the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). For some incredible and pretty traumatic synchronicities, I ended up in Phoenix leaving my life behind in the UK. I am not English but moved there from Italy in my 20ties. I always wanted to learn English and I was fascinated by the British culture so I migrated from Naples, Italy where I was born to London. From there, I traveled quite a bit all over Europe, the Middle East and lived in Africa for a while. After my adventures, I settled down in North London and I became an accredited Counselor as well as a Mindfulness practitioner and a Laughter Wellness ambassador. I was the manager of a Mental Health day service and I used Laughter Yoga as a healing modality. I have been in the Mental Health profession for decades and I have seen people from all walks of life and with a variety of diagnoses; from schizophrenia to suicidal ideation, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, eating disorder, etc. My approach towards better Mental Health was indeed unique and my center was known for being very creative. The center still continues to exist back in the UK. My story is one of loss and starting my life from scratch at the age of 50. For a series of events, I was left homeless, I had no money, or credit history or credit card or car or green card. I was a nobody in a foreign country. I felt lost, I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. I was stripped from all that was material, even my Identity as a Counselor because my license and qualification here meant nothing. I was stuck and stranded. Then, I started to teach Laughter Yoga classes and things started to change. My classes became more popular and I started to be invited to different events. I got my green card through an amazing immigration Lawyer Tala Hartsough in San Francisco and I started to see the reason why this all happened. I had to lose it all in order to go on my path of helping people to restore their inner joy through the practice of intentional laughter. I am witnessing so much transformation through this incredibly simple technique. When I ask people how they feel at the end of my session, these are some of the words that usually come up within the group: #connected, #released, #loved, #energized, #liberated, #ecstatic, #clear, #joyful, #fun, #complete, #whole, #healed, #free, #happy, #peaceful. #light. I would love to get a Bus and turn it into a colorful Joy Ride, driving all around Phoenix and beyond to give people who have any kind of Mental Health issues a bountiful experience of joy while riding the bus. There is going to be my laughter crew, a Joy Coach, lots of Mental Health resources available right there on the bus. This is my dream.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many struggles and obstacles along the way. As I mentioned earlier, I was left homeless and lost all of my material possessions. All I had was a small bag and my Italian passport and my passion for teaching Laughter Wellness.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have been teaching Laughter Yoga for decades, first in the UK within the Mental Health field and now, here in Phoenix. I am so excited about the numerous studies being recently made out the benefits of simulated laughter.
Our world is struggling with the negative health effects of stress, unhealthy lifestyles, food, and other damaging habits:
Stress has been called the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century” by the World Health Organization. 40% of job turnover is due to stress. Healthcare expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress.
One of the best feelings in the world is the deep-rooted belly laugh. It can bring people together and establish amazing connections. Everything from a slight giggle to a side-splitting guffaw can change the temperature of a room from chilly unfamiliarity to a warm family-like atmosphere.
There is already so much to love for laughter that it seems greedy to look for more, but that’s exactly what researchers Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan at the Loma Linda University in California have done. These two doctors have researched the benefits of laughter and found amazing results.
Increased oxygen intake and blood flow, improved blood vessel function, and lower blood pressure. This helps protect your heart, boosts energy, dissolves stress and allows you to gain focus.
Because of my passion for this fairly new methodology, I created LOL4Health.
LOL 4 HEALTH Intention is to spread healing through Laughter.
Whether you’re looking for an escape from the somber state of the world, or just wanting to reengage a part of you that’s been dormant—accessing joy, pleasure, love, gratitude, peace, and connection— riding the waves of laughter to embrace all it has to offer for your body, your mind, and your spirit.
By Laughing together, we erase negative vibrations and recharge not only ourselves but the world around us with fresh renewed, re-energized positive energy! Together we connect and heal one giggle at the time!
In a world where there’s much to be taken seriously, it’s important to remember to laugh. It is important to maintain a perspective that there is still much to be thankful for and to celebrate in your life.
It’s my passion and inspiration to share the enormous benefits of this methodology. Because of my Laughter practice, I am a better Human Being. I created LOL4Health with the intention to keep on spreading the healing that this phenomenal approach offers.
I offer a Laughter Wellness coaching program that is unlike any other one that produces lasting changes at work, for individuals, groups, and couples.
What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in Italy and as a child, I was very shy but I remember loving to laugh and to eat pizza.
The real Italian pizza, the one made with fresh tomatoes, basil leaves and buffalo mozzarella, not the mozzarella that you find in the grocery stores around here. I loved laughing, I loved it so much that one night as we all sat around the dinner table in Naples, we all started to laugh at something really silly and my chair fell backwards and I hit the edge of the table not knowing that I had just cut myself, nevertheless I continued to laugh. Everyone else stopped laughing and they looked scared, pointing at me as I kept on laughing! I didn’t even notice that I had a huge cut on my forehead and that blood was pouring out of it. That night, I was rushed to the hospital to have stitches on my forehead. I call it my laughter wound. 🙂
