Meet Clint Monnier of Monnier Woodcraft in Avondale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clint Monnier.

Clint, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started with woodworking 2 years ago when I bought my first condo. I decided to put up a pallet wall in my living room, that sort of started it. I grew up on a farm in Ohio so I’m no stranger to power tools. After the wall was complete, I had some pallets left over and took to the internet for ideas. I made a coffee table and some wine racks with the remaining pallets.

At this point, I really got into building things and found some videos on cutting boards. I needed real hardwoods for this and some new tools but I love cooking so decided to give it a shot. After I made my first couple and posted pictures, I had friends asking me to make them some. After a while, I decided to start selling them online and at local events.

After the first year, things started picking up and I needed space, my patio at the condo wasn’t cutting it. So, I sold it and bought a single family home and immediately converted to garage over to a shop, which is where I’m at now.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggles at first was making them outside. I had no garage and minimal equipment. When orders would come through in the summer I had to set up a canopy out on my patio to have some shade, even though it was still over 100 degrees but I had to do what I had to do. Once I moved and things started expanding I had a lot of requests for larger boards, which my equipment couldn’t handle. I have slowly upgraded all my machinery with the sales from my products and now have a much better set up.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Right now, I only make cutting boards, but many types. I am playing around with some other ideas but all kitchen related. I actually cook and barbecue, a lot. I think it really helps me connect more with my customers. I’m proud of how far I have brought my business considering it started outside with no real shop. I have more than tripled my sales this year over last, which was a huge accomplishment for me.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I really like Arizona and think it’s a great place for business. It’s affordable and there is a lot going on, I think that makes it easier to get your name and product out there on the market.
