Meet Chris von Nieda of WPsitehelpers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris von Nieda.

Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Chris von Nieda, I’m the founder of WPsitehelpers and a United States Marine Corp. Veteran. I currently live in Arizona with my wife and kids. In 1998 I saw the Internet for the first time. It changed my life. I was working as a loan officer for a mortgage company in California and I got an email with a link in it to the Internet. I clicked the link and knew immediately, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

From that day on, I immersed myself in all things computer and especially the Internet. Why was I so excited?

Because it was the WORLD WIDE WEB! You can communicate with the world! No big deal today, but back then WOWWWW. It was also a World Wide Canvas. With a few clicks, you can show the entire world anything you want and have access to information like never before. Soon after that, my role changed from Loan Officer to computer guy to ultimately the Director of IT for 3 offices and over 100 workstations. I rebuilt the company website too of course!

As early as 2001 I was passionate about helping people get online with a website and started my own company. Back then, it was much harder to build a website than it is today. We had to write code and there were no useful tools to make it fast and easy. Each page had to be created separately.

Each time you want to change something, you had to manually change each page. It was time-consuming and frustrating. Thankfully Matt Mullenweg came along in 2003 and together with Mike Little created WordPress. Fast forward to 2008 when I discovered WordPress for the first time when I was asked to build 75 wordpress websites. Even though I had no idea what WordPress was, I took the job of course!

Getting to know WordPress was another one of those holy cow moments!!! I thought it was Incredibly easy to use, powerful thanks to an unlimited supply of plugins and themes and flexible enough to do just about anything needed. I was in love… From then on, every website I built was powered by WordPress. There have been hundreds since.

BUT, my inbox and voicemail started filling up daily with requests for help from customers. Everything from changing a few words on a page to major overhauls and updates. I couldn’t keep up! I wanted to help them, but there just wasn’t enough time in the day.

I started WPsitehelpers because I wanted to give my customers better service and I knew there were many others out there that needed help with their WordPress blog or website and either they had no one to help them, or they could not afford the help that was available.

Has it been a smooth road?
