Meet Chris Baxla of Baxla Fabrication in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Baxla.

Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started building signs at a very young age working for my father part time while going to school. I went of to NAU to be an engineer during my senior year I ran into some personal problems that forced me to go back to work. So I went back to building signs. I became forman of a local shop after a couple years, then decided to go on my own. Working from home at 1st allowed me to walk my kids to school, which was priceless. I started my business with one sales call almost 18 years ago, and it has grown every year since.

We now have a 12,000 sq ft plant with all kinds of equipment and we build signs for all over the country. Almost any airport you go in, you will see something we made.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been pretty smooth. I would say the biggest obstacles are all the taxes and requirements from the government. I don’t mind paying taxes, but they really stick it to small businesses, while they give large corporations all kinds of breaks.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Baxla Fabrication – what should we know?
We specialize in electric store signs. but, we also do smaller signs and bigger signs. We can make stickers banners and shorts, while we can also build billboards and scoreboards. But, store front letters are our bread and butter.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My father helped me start my business by allowing me to use his shop for a while, until I got my own tools and equipment. He became one of my customers before he retiree. I also learned how to build from him and his employees.

Of course my wife has been by my side and helped tremendously over the years. I couldn’t have done this without her. My kids are my inspiration.
