Meet Cheryl Wheeler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Wheeler.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cheryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Coming from the business world and life experience, I returned to school for clinical psychology. Continued on for a Ph.D. in Psychology (3 courses from completion!). The first few years I worked with sex offenders who had come out of prison after 20+ years. Through these clients I learned about trauma, as many of them had experienced trauma as well as created victims with severe trauma. Being a survivor myself of sexual abuse, I wanted to work with both sides of trauma, victims and perpetrators.

Trauma work continued while working with Native Americans on the reservation. While trauma has been the bases for all my work, I have worked with a variety of mental health issues including addiction, eating disorders, depression/anxiety, infidelity, couples, family and individuals, etc.

I became disillusioned with the medical model of psychotherapy when I realized that most psychotherapist work under insurance companies dictates. True therapy cannot be resolved in 4-6 sessions. Breaking away from the medical model I choose to work as a Transformational Life Coach, restrictions as a coach include not working with serious mental illness or anyone who would be better suited to work with a psychologist or in need of medical management. I’ve found Transformational Coaching to be a step beyond traditional therapy to a higher level of functioning. Taking into consideration the “holistic approach” (whole person) incorporating mind, body and spirit.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have intentionally set my career path psychotherapist to psychologist, struggles are with the system aka the medical model. I believe that I am among the first wave of providers who are leaving typical counseling to include the holistic approach of Life Coaching.

Struggles are at times with marketing and running a business while learning the ropes at the same time! Bringing in new clients, paying monthly bills, these are all part of the entrepreneur’s life!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Alternatives in Counseling: holistic perspectives aka Concierge Online Coach – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
For the past 12 years I have been involved with healing the human heart, not with the precision of a surgeon’s hands, rather by taking witness to other’s pain. Together we have taken the journey of healing, breaking free from the emotional bonds that hold us prisoner… taking flight and achieving emotional freedom!

Emotional Distress (depression, anxiety, anger, stress…)
Relational Discord (Couples, Divorce, Parenting…)
Life Exploration & Satisfaction (business, career, goals…)
Communication Effectiveness (professional, personal)
Sobriety Coaching (addictions – behavioral, substance, sexual)

Transformational life coaching removes the pathological or pathogenic aspects that the medical disease model of mental disorders prescribes. No longer is the client viewed as ill with a diagnosis in need of treatment.

Transformational coaching is a process of implementing critical thinking into action, by testing hypothesis, and applying analytical thinking.

Providing sessions in mid-town office, client home, and virtual tele-health.

Concierge Online Coaching: Ideal for professionals who want to avoid the perception of public or professional stigma for seeking help. Online HIPAA approved teleconference sessions, secure, confidential and never recorded. Transformational coaching is a process of implementing critical thinking into action, by testing hypothesis, and applying analytical thinking. Trained as a *psychotherapist, I’ve come to find Transformational Coaching to be a step beyond traditional psychotherapy, to a higher level of functioning!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plan is to begin writing and publishing for the general audience, books I’m working on:

Sacred Sexuality, addressing healing nature of this bond with a loving partner, especially healing from sexual trauma.

The merging of self, understanding the 3 aspects of self, the sacred soul self that has always existed, genetic memory of all biological ancestors, and previous lives. Each of these aspects past, present, future all come together.
