Meet Chelsea Cavender of SLATHER Botanicals in East Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Cavender.

Chelsea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a love for plants and science. After graduating from ASU with a Plant Biology degree, I wanted to find a career that used applied science to create everyday products. I worked in research and development for a big skincare company, making products for salons and celebrities like Jenni JWOWW from Jersey Shore and the First Lady (no joke). It was there that I really got a zest for formulation and building private label products from the ground up. In 2012, I decided to break out and start my own skincare company with a focus on natural face and body products I like to use and share with others. At first, I did local farmers markets and pop-up boutiques–sometimes 4-5 a week! It was a lot of hustle. Now we have a toddler and another baby on the way, so I’ve transitioned to online, local holiday events versus weekly ones, and retail at salons/stores.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s hard to start your own business and put yourself out there. It’s only natural to compare yourself and your brand to others and doubt your vision at points along the way. A few years ago, I wrestled with sticking to my niche/target audience and focusing on products that really resonate with my brand. It’s easy to want to make a bunch of different products and try to sell to anyone and everyone but becoming more specialized was a good move for us.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with SLATHER botanicals – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We make plant-based skincare products, hand-blended from scratch with love. Our specialties are facial, custom, and private label products. Creating custom products is a rewarding outlet because it’s always new and changing, more experimental, and lots of fun to make unique and exclusive products that clients are excited about. We are known for being skincare “free from restrictions”…natural, vegan, gluten free, pregnancy & nursing mama safe, and sensitive skin friendly. I am proud of the products we make (a.k.a. my formula children), how well they work, and the response we get when people try them.

A passion for ingredients sets us apart. Your product is only as good as what goes into it. We source the finest quality plant ingredients, largely organic or wild crafted. Great ingredients make great products, and people love how our products look, feel, smell, and work. Having the plant and ingredient knowledge behind the products makes our clients confident.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We really want to be in more retail locations across the country that align with our brand so more people can try our products. That’s the focus right now. Also, a private label push…I’d love to create more exclusive products for salons and spas. It’s a great opportunity because shop owners, estheticians, massage therapists, etc. get custom tailored products they have always dreamed of using and we get to make them…it’s just awesome! Further out in the future, I want to grow more of the plant ingredients we use in our products. I think that’s a wish many modern apothecary style skincare brands share. I’d love to grow, dry, and distill as many ingredients as possible.
